It hasn't took long for the left wing socialists in Europe to peddle their intentions to Obama.
Gordon Brown tonight called for a new age of progressive multilateralism as he hailed Barack Obama's ideals of democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope. In what will be interpreted as rejection of George Bush's unilateral actions, the prime minister used a keynote speech at the Lord Mayor's Banquet to urge world leaders to join together to create a truly global society.
"While I see a world that is facing financial crisis and still diminished by conflict and injustice, I also see the chance to forge a new multilateralism that is both hard-headed and progressive," Brown said.
"And I believe that in our international co-operation on finance, climate change, terrorism and ending conflict, there is evidence of this new multilateralism at work in the world fairer, more stable and more prosperous because it is rooted in cooperation and justice." . .

“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.

America’s Hard Sell

The authors argue that for more than half a century, the US ensured that five Big Ideas shaped international politics. Those were: peace is better than war; hegemony, at least the benign sort, is better than a balance of power; capitalism is better than socialism; democracy is better than dictatorship; and Western culture is better than all the rest. They argue that as American dominance wanes and other ideas compete for pre-eminence in the 21st century, the US is going to have to refine its sales pitch to maintain its position as the leading arbiter of ideas in the world.
Bruce W. Jentleson is professor of public policy studies and political science at Duke University. Steven Weber is professor of political science and director of the Institute of International Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
