Barack Obama’s “Auntie Zeituni” plans to fight a deportation order so that she can stay in the United States, according to her lawyer.
Zeituni Onyango, who is affectionately described in Mr Obama’s autobiography Dreams from My Father, was found by The Times last week living in a South Boston council flat.
She is now staying with a clergyman cousin in Cleveland, Ohio, but Mr Obama has not made contact with her since the story broke, Mike Rogers, her spokesman, said yesterday.
Ms Onyango, 56, the half-sister of Mr Obama’s father, is recalled in his bestselling memoir as the first Kenyan relative to greet him on his first trip to his father’s homeland in 1988.
She reportedly moved to the United States on a temporary visa in 2000 to join a son who had been accepted at a college in Boston. Her application for asylum was turned down by a judge in 2004, who then ordered her to leave the country.
Mr Obama has said that he was last in touch with his aunt two years ago, when she told him she was in Boston. He insists he did not know she was living in the United States illegally.
Asked about her predicament, he suggested that she comply with the deportation order. “If she is violating laws, those laws have to be obeyed,” Mr Obama said.
Margaret Wong, the lawyer handling her case, said Ms Onyango could be barred from reentering for three to ten years if she left the US now. She needed to stay for medical care because she could not walk.
“She has to go in a wheelchair but because of her pride she tries to give the impression that she can walk,” she said.

Typical Harvard lawyer mindset: “if” when there has already been a ruling handed down. Whoever the judge was who made the ruling must be wetting their pants knowing they are about to have their finding overturned.

There was a article recently stating that the One’s minions made a point of being fully aware of the whereabouts of all of his half-siblings and oddball relatives, including auntie, early in the campaign.
The One lied loud and clear when he stated that he had no knowledge of her whereabouts.
Or else his minions lie to him a lot. I’m sure that’s the case. The One would not lie to his subjects, would he?
