Voting for Reproductive Freedom (NYT pro-abort alert)

Voters in three states did the right thing last week by defeating dangerous anti-abortion measures on their ballots.

In Colorado, an overwhelming vote of 73 percent to 27 percent rejected a wild initiative that would have amended the state’s Constitution to bestow on fertilized eggs, prior to implantation in the womb, the same legal rights and protections that apply to people once they are born. In addition to ending abortion rights, this doozy threatened to ban widely used forms of contraception, curtail medical research involving embryos, shutter fertility clinics, and criminalize necessary medical care.

In South Dakota, 55 percent of voters said no to a sweeping abortion ban that its backers had hoped to use as vehicle for challenging Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that recognized a woman’s right to make her own childbearing decisions. The defeated measure was a near-twin of the abortion ban handily rejected by voters just two years ago.

In California, meanwhile, voters turned back an attempt by abortion-rights opponents to mandate parental notification, the issue’s third ballot defeat in the state in four years.

It would be wishful thinking to think these outcomes mean supporters of reproductive rights can now breathe easy. Proponents of the losing initiatives have already said they plan to try again, and no doubt the future of Roe v. Wade will continue to be slugged out in the courts, state legislatures, and in Congress.

Yet, along with the election of a new president and at least five new senators supportive of reproductive rights, the fate of the three ballot initiatives is a powerful affirmation that this remains a nation that values women’s privacy and health.

Why is abortion the only medical procedure a teen can get without their parents knowing. I couldn’t see a dermatologist when I was 15 without my parents knowing about it, yet a surgical procedure with real risks is ok?

Just one point from many that come to mind

It’s funny the NYT libs are so scornful of protections for fertilized human eggs.

Just imagine the wording of the lawsuit that would be filed if an uberlib couple or a lesbian put a fertilized embryo in storage, and the fertility clinic accidentally destroyed it or gave it to someone else

LIBERAL logic question: so perhaps only wanted embryos and wanted fetuses- are human? and the unwanted ones - aren’t?

If I remember correctly, the penalty for destroying an eagle’s egg is $5000 and/or a year in jail.

Why is that?

Anybody who understands what birth control is knows when life begins.

“Reproductive freedom”. That would be what women in China do NOT have, where they are forced to only have one child maximum.

This is about KILLING a life.

A minor does not have a legal right to consent to sex. That is what the whole “Age of Consent” set of laws is about. She also does not have legal authority to consent to ANY medical procedure, her legal guardian must do that for her.

So giving a minor a legal right to abortion without parental notification is granting a very large exception to two standing facts of law. Who is the adult male who's paying for her abortion and why isn't he being prosecuted for statutory rape?

There IS a manner of freedom FROM reproduction that these men and women could be engaging in if they want to engage in recreation sex with no chance of pregnancy, tie your tubes, cut out the anatomical parts that make conception possible (eggs, sperm, etc). But NO, that would be too drastic, not when we can just KILL the baby and pretend “none of this ever happened”. Selfish people who put their own “rights” above other living beings RIGHTS.

Abortion is child abuse. It kills a child and it is forced on some children to hide their pregnancies.

• Provides that an additional penalty of $100 be imposed against any person who takes, harvests, or possesses the eggs of certain marine turtle species.
• Provides for the additional penalty to be assessed for each egg involved in the violation.
• Revises provisions of the Marine Turtle Protection Act to provide that it is a third degree felony to take, kill, possess, disturb, mutilate, destroy, cause to be destroyed, sell, offer for sale, transfer, molest, or harass a marine turtle or its nest, hatchlings, eggs, or parts thereof or to commit any such act that involves 12 or more marine turtle eggs.
• Provides that it is a third degree felony to solicit or conspire to violate the Marine Turtle Protection Act.
