Editorial: Thin the RINO herd

Now what?

The Republican Party -- nationally and in Pennsylvania -- lies in tatters. Having lost the White House to Barack Obama, suffered historic losses in congressional elections, been almost shut out in statewide races and experienced further erosion in the state House, there is no doubt the GOP has hit rock bottom.

It is, most significantly, a loss for so-called moderate Republicanism. Party moderates have opined time and again that a more middle-of-the-road presidential candidate could win Pennsylvania. McCain was touted as that candidate. It was a double-digit trouncing.

McCain.....O U T!

And not just McCain either. Every last idiot who voted for that wall street bailout legislation needs to be fired. No more socialists masquerading as Republicans! Repeal the patriot act, the DMCA and - while i'm dreaming - let's rethink the entire 'war on drugs' strategy.

I'm just not politically savvy enough to know how it's done.

It begins at the local grassroot level. Get involved at that level.

Palin was too late to make a difference in this election.

She excited the base, but we all know that the base would’ve grudgingly showed up on election day no matter what to keep the socialist Hussein out of the White House.

Palin would’ve been a great asset, and maybe even led us to victory, if the MSM wouldn’t have criticized and mocked her every chance they got. That kind of stuff turned away low info independents and undecided voters.

See, that's the part I don't get. we all agree that socialism is bad. And I can even see how you might think Obama is a socialist. But what about George Bush and the current makeup of the Republican party? The wall street bailout bill WAS SOCIALISM. The Republicans created it, they passed it, and Bush signed it into law.

If socialism is bad and the Republicans are socialists.....what's next?

Absolutely! We need a consolidated list of these changes that we can use to bury the RNC.

The Republicans have lost their way. they've become socialists, they support torture and violations of the law and common decency. they lie to us about what they stand for, saying one thing and doing the opposite. THAT is why Palin lost this election. She's the poster babe for hypocrisy. Voters saw that and said to themselves 'nope, not voting for the phony chick with the glasses'. Kinda like this Kosling's bong-water fantasy that Trig Palin was actually Bristol's child by way of her father actually becoming a national news issue.

"I could no longer vote for the Republican party after Bush authorized torture in Gitmo."

Your troll slip is showing. I don't care how long you've been here, if it walks like a troll and acts like a troll and all that.

And how is pointing out that torture and Christianity are incompatable 'being a troll'? Look - it's because of hypocrisy like this we lost the election. If I (and others) don't point out the flaws in what currently passes for 'conservative' ideology then what then?

Ugh...Lingle is the type that are sure losers...

The GOP ran a pro-illegal candidate for President...and lost Hispanic vote 2 to 1.

Lingle comes from one of the most liberal states in the union. That stuff works in Hawaii....but GOP Liberals are loser just about everywhere else

To paraphrase Peter Hitchens:

I really don’t see how the [Palin] devotees can ever in future mock the Moonies, the Scientologists or people who claim to have been abducted in flying saucers. This is a cult like the one which grew up around Princess Diana, bereft of reason and hostile to facts.

Good idea....allott delegates based on number of registered voters...esp if they are GOP voters.

Also would get the state GOPs to go out and register Republican voters

There may be many reasons that McCain and the republicans lost this election but I can assure you that efforts to defend the American people from terrorist acts was not any part of that reason except for some misguided do-gooders like you who should join up in the Rat party where, of course, they may well use torture to rid the US of conservatives and you will be right there with them.

So you are willing to destroy freedom in order to save it? If i'm not with you, i'm against you? Strength through Purity and all that?

scary stuff. no wonder voters don't trust you. And for the record, i'm not mocking you. I merely point out just what is wrong with the Republican party (as I see it).

The time has now come to rebuild. This will require two things: new faces in party leadership and a return to the core principles that have historically made the Republican Party great.

Until and unless those two things happen, the GOP is in for a long period of wandering in the electoral wilderness.

How many true conservatives who DID run for office actually won? Russell lost to MURTHA for cryin' out loud!

Republicans have sold out, melding with Democrats into one big incumbent party.

That is true!! We tried to get along with the Dems and what did we get for it? Nothing. We need a strong REPUBLICAN PARTY that will be first and foremost a CONSERVATIVE PARTY -- in terms of lower taxes, smaller government and choicews in health care and education. We need to rebuild the party and besides moderates we need to kick out other so-called conservatives who are in the GOP on one issues!!

What you are saying is that the conservative base, unless their passion is excited, will allow a liberal Dem to be elected. And the second part of your proposition suggests that a liberal would vote for other than a liberal Dem [i.e. a conservative].

To win, you have to get the base enthused enough to donate money, time, and energy in support of the candidate. Say what you want about Obama, he had the ability to get lots of people enthusiastically pulling for him.

A liberal-moderate will vote liberal rather than conservative-moderate. We saw that in this election.
