Russia sees hope of missile progress with Obama
Sun Nov 9, 2008 8:04am EST
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia hopes for constructive talks with the next U.S. administration on Washington's planned missile defense system in Europe, Russian media quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on Sunday.
A Russian deputy foreign minister said separately, in an interview with Interfax news agency, that Moscow would not carry out a threat to deploy tactical missiles near Poland if Washington scrapped its plans to deploy its missile system in Europe.
Washington says the missile defense shield, which would consist of 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic, would help protect from missile attacks by "rogue states" such as Iran.
U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has supported work on a missile defense system, but says it must be "pragmatic and cost-effective" and cannot divert resources from other priorities until its effectiveness is proven.

Mr. Bear, meet Mr. Sponge Bob.
Right, progress in moving west.
Most of Europe is too ignorant to realize what the consequences are if Obama does lay missile defense on the back burner, withdraws from Iraq prematurely, cuts funds for needed continual modernization of our DoD..........
They are like lemmings chasing each other right over the side of the cliff. Believing in socialism, secularism, and devoid of the harsh realities that MOST of the world is ruled by despots who's interests collide with those of the West and free world. For some reason, not even Belarus, a marionette of Russia and dictatorship, seems to alarm these great intellectuals.
There is hope though. Obama already “removed” from his website his Iraq plan which entailed a withdraw in 16 months which he advocated while running for office. 5 days after being elected and not even in office yet, he's already changing his positions on issues: http://change.gov/
This is so sad. The first American president to take office as a gelding.
Obama has apparently brought a lot of hope and change — for our enemies, current and potential.
Obama will cancel the system, but he’ll claim it’s because it’s too expensive and unproven, not that it’s a sign of weakness. BS. I can’t wait to hear his excuse for not doing anything beyond worthless negotiations with the Iranians over their nuclear weapons program. I can hear him now, “This morning I spoke personally with the President of Iran, and he assured me that his country has no intentions of attacking Israel, and that their nuclear weapons are for defensive purposes only. I thanked him for these assurances and told him I look forward to my upcoming trip to Tehran for our first face to face talks.” Scary.
My fear is if Obama looks like he might win in 2012, the ChiComs will decide they’ve waited long enough to get Taiwan back.
Since the missile shield deal is now dead, Poland won’t be getting those Patriot missile batteries they bargained so hard for either. Instead they’ll get nothing. Absolutely nothing. Barry X is going to make sure the USA itself has no missile defense, much less Poland.
Taiwan... and the Spratley Islands, and the African oil fields, and the Northern and Southern Islands of Japan, and on and on and on...
Progress as defined as us giving them a mile, them taking another mile and then us back a foot?
