Barack Obama's election was a historic victory for America's aspiration to be a country where anything is possible, and where all men are created equal. His election also was a victory for democracy. Even if many Americans don't like the electoral results, his campaign proved that when the American people are inspired and mobilize, they can seize the reins of government and demand change.

Dewine is gone, thankfully.
>>We have often worked with the enemy to get things done e.g. Stalin, Pakistan, etc.
Stop thinking of them as rational. With our enemies, there was enlightened self-interest, which made negotiations difficult but possible. Libs are anything BUT rational. There is only their interests. Negotiating with them - bipartisanship - is like playing one-man ping pong.
All you have to do is look at the last eight years of BDS - is that the sign of a rational mind?
It is indeed a long list.
Conservative Absolutists are one of our biggest problems.
It seems that many a conservative has a pet issue or two, and any politician who isn't on the Right Side of the issue(s) chosen is a stinking RINO.
Absolutists will continue to feel morally superior as they remain politically unimportant and lose election after election.
As for me, I'll take 75% of my wish list in a winning candidate over a 100% match in a losing candidate every single time.
Agreed. Denigrating one of our few remaining senators, and one who is staunchly conservative 98% of the time does no good.
As much as it sucks to admit it, we will have to work with the Democrats. Acting like grown-ups is not a bad thing.
The big part of the solution is chiseling loose support from him, from the Dems, from the independents. The fight needs to be taken to them. This will mean not sipping tea with the pinkie extended. This will mean telling the other side that their guy is wrong, every day for the next four years. Even when they don’t want to hear it; especially when they don’t want to hear it.
Conservatism needs to re-attach its scrotum. Getting dismissively vocal with the neighbors about this guy on a routine basis does. That the American people elected him is not prima facie evidence of his worthiness of my respect. I want him and his administration to fail, I want him to lose decisively in 2012, and I don’t believe for one minute that being polite and “taking the high road” is going to accomplish it.
There’s only one road. It’s theirs right now. We have to decide if we want it to take it from them.
What could Coburn be thinking?
Yeah, cause, ya know, running one of the loosest un-principled senators of our time brought us such a great victory.
It’s time for all you “blame conservatives first” McCain trolls to leave. Your time is over.
Colonel! I didn’t say WORK with Hussein on issues where we disagree! Sir! I said to find where we can agree and work with him!
Please look at my posting history. It will testify to my disdain for the so-called Messiah. I am not going soft. I am merely stating the political realities. We don’t surrender any principles. We’ll lose some of those battles just because of the numbers, but we’ll be on record so that when the results of Hussein’s policies fail we can show that to the American people.
On the other hand, if the face we constantly show to our American public is one of constant disagreement, we’ll suffer the same fate the Democrats did in 2002 and 2004...Bush added to the Republican seats then, because the Democrats were constant naysayers, and the American people did not like that kind of attitude.
By being agreeable on the few things where we find common ground, our arguments against Hussein on the other issues have more weight, because we are not seen as mere “naysayers”, but as people who have a higher principle than “anything my opponent wants, I will oppose.”
Hope that makes sense.
Respectfully,
RD
Goldstategop, you offer about the same perspective as I do.
Colonel, please consider this post, too.

Coburn will definitely fight them? People of Ayer’s &Dohrn’s mindset, massive executions of those who disagree? ‘Rev’ Wright & G_d DAMN America!!!” A President (by COUP, not election)who is making his plans for a million-member Internal Security Force? And more—! Coburn will be shot down before his hand reaches his holster (fig.) I know people are afraid, but if we go along & get along & sing kumbaya—you will reach a point where you will wish you had fought this outrage. Al-Abama was not legally elected and you know it, so what’s the double-talk for?
In this article? Probably that as much fun as it may be to be disagreeable on everything it isn’t the way forward. On the few things we agree on we should work to get those things done. When we don’t agree we should say so.
Also the Republican party should follow actual conservative principles.
I'm not talking about McCain. I'm talking about the FReepers who want to label someone like Tom Coburn a RINO. I mean, fer cryin' out loud!
Its time for all you blame conservatives first McCain trolls to leave. Your time is over.
Again, wasn't defending McLame.
The reason McCain got the nomination is that the moderates have no problem compromising, so they can form a majority easier. When Absolutists splinter themselves into tiny super-minorities -- the "Tom Coburn is a RINO" super-minority has spoken recently -- then the idea of winning much of anything becomes a daydream.
I'm not advocating the continued nomination of real RINOs like McCain, but FReepers seem to revel in calling each others' favored candidate a RINO at every opportunity, even when that candidate is demonstrably and clearly on the conservative side.
We need to do a better job of rallying around candidates who are as conservative as possible, and very electable.
I know we've felt only the short end of compromises for a very long time. But abandoning compromise altogether will only guarantee permanent minority status.
I don’t know all of TChris’s posting history as you seem to, but I don’t think that is what he was saying.
I think there is a strong case McCain isn’t with us even 75% of the time. What it seems to me he is saying is that Coburn is with us. Automatically labeling Coburn a RINO because he says we shouldn’t be solely the anti-Democrat party is counter-productive.
Demanding 100% fealty to yours or our idea of what a conservative should be won’t work. People can be a conservative without being 100% in your mold.
Sorry to put words in your mouth TChris.
You did an admirable job. :-)
Yeah, and how did that turn out for Poland, et al?
Why don’t we wait until the next session of Congress to start with this? Hard to have an actual disagreement before any new legislation has been put forward.
