Democrats talk of a ‘permanent progressive majority’ By: Andy Barr November 7, 2008 01:38 PM EST

Echoing Karl Rove's words from four years ago, Democratic pollsters on Friday touted the creation of a “permanent progressive majority.”

“This was not just a change election, but a sea-change election,” Robert Borosage, co-director of the Campaign for America’s Future, said during remarks at the National Press Club. “This is the end of the conservative era.”

“What you’re seeing in the nation is the emergence of a center-left majority,” Borosage continued. “We are witnessing the creation of a permanent progressive majority.”

Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg agreed, saying that the United States is now “in a progressive period.”

“The conservative movement brought about by the Gingrich revolution has been crushed,” he said.

Greenberg pointed to exit polls conducted by his firm, Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, showing that Democrats hold a significant edge over Republicans on the issues on which most voters based their decision on Election Day.

“Area after area people have tilted toward the progressive policy,” Greenberg said pointing specifically to the economy, the war in Iraq, energy and healthcare. “There has been a change in the way we think about society and the economy, and Democrats have a huge advantage.”

Shortly after the GOP’s triumphant 2004 election, Rove heralded the beginning of a “permanent Republican majority.” After the win, Republicans, at the direction of Rove, began looking for ways to expand the tent, specifically reaching out to black and Hispanic voters.

But the Republican Party’s effort to expand its coalition collapsed not long after Rove’s declaration, as continued bad news from Iraq, a failed response to Hurricane Katrina and charges of corruption on Capitol Hill sunk the GOP’s prospects in 2006, a trend that continued in 2008.

“If these nuts believe this they’ll be out of power in the Congress in 2010.”

I agree 1000%. These liberal schleps are ALREADY over reaching. Let them do it and the whole nation will see it.

If that was the case then all or at least some of the gay marriage referendums would have passed. Answer: none of them passed, not one, and I read that most black voters in very blue California voted against gay marriage. Sorry, this is still a right of center country.

Lol.

Yikes.

Hey, we thought the same for our side. Look what happened. A LOT changes in two to four years, and the voters are FICKLE.

They are not liberals, but in the center to slightly right.

It just depends on which side convinces them.

If these guys think they will permanently be in power, they are mistaken.

Note that he cited three examples of media hysteria and flat-out lying as reasons the GOP failed.

The Dinosaur Media are the Enemy. What, beside simply turning them off (which I've already done) can we do to destroy them?

The Censorship Doctrine, oops I meant "Fairness Doctrine," and the host of totalitarian legislation these monsters will enact, and we will be well on our way to a ‘permanent progressive majority’:

I’m old enough to remember when the Democratic Party was being consigned to the ash heap several times. Guess what? Everything is cyclical.

I remember when Bush1 won the election in '88 thinking, "the democrats are dinosaurs and will never again be in power."

Hogwash.

I won’t believe this unless the GOP loses in 2010 and 2012.

The Dems lost three straight elections from 2000-2004. Politics runs a natural course, and right now, the GOP and conservatives are regrouping. We’ll be back, stronger than ever, in time.

This honeymoon will be over in a Noo Yawk minute when Hussein starts self-destructing. And, as we are witnessing, that process has already started.

LOL denile aint just a river in egypt.. With an Immensely unpopular president in office (no thanks to the media) and a huge chunk of the GOP senate seats up for grabs this year you managed to pick up a small hand full of seats. In 2010 you will have no such advantage..

What happened 2 years after Bill Clinton won the white house? Look for a repeat in 2010..

America is still center-right. Don't let them fool you.

This is only true if you understand newspeak, i.e. right is left. Americans, like Europeans, have acquiesced to the inevitability of big government socialism. We are merely joining the rest of the world which sees freedom as a secondary concern to comfort.

You are exactly correct. Plus, the MSM and Clintonistas said the same thing in 1992 only to see the House, Senate and most Governorships flip to our side 2 years later. We had our 8 years, we put up a uninspiring candidate for president (not vice president), his staff ran a miserable campaign and we lost. It’s time for new, younger and more internet savy leadership, and I hope Bobby Jindal takes the lead.

Someone wrote a book not to long ago about how changing demographics will result in a permanent takeover of the government by progressives. Trends have a way of changing in unpredictable ways. The hispanic population will continue to increase, which will result in more votes for Democrats, but many of these hispanics have very conservative values, as demonstrated in the passage of Prop. 8 in California.
