Angelou: Now I Won't Have To Apologize For My Country When Abroad

You might not be thrilled by the election of Barack Obama, but look on the bright side: it's going to make life a lot easier for Maya Angelou when she hangs out with her European friends. Asked by Andrea Mitchell during MSNBC's 1 PM hour what was going through her mind as the results rolled in, the poet mentioned, among other things:
I realized, almost within the minute, I don't have to apologize for my country when I'm abroad. I can say: "I belong to a great country." And the Europeans who say: aren't you glad to be here in France where we don't have the racism you live under? Aren't you glad you're here in Britain, where we don't have -- I mean, I've been on the defensive so long. This time I can say: "I am an American: look at us, look at what we've just achieved."

Maya but you do have to apologize to those who know and appreciate real poetry not the sappy doggerel you “write”.

So all that baloney about past transgressions of the US wasn’t true?
What do you say when they ask why Bill Clinton wasn’t turned over to the Hague war crimes tribunal for trial?

My ancestors left Europe because they didn’t want to live there. We saved Europe’s butt three times in the last century. We gave the World a republican form of government, a written constitution, and democratic elections. They gave us monarchy, fascism, and communism. I don’t worry too much about European opinions.

Just a wild and crazy thought here.. how about not apologizing for the United States of America, ever!.. No country has done more to help so many around the world. No country has sacrificed more, no country has given more, no other country is the first on the scene when disasters strike the world... How many billions of lives have been saved because of the USA.. Our faults are shared by every other country in the world, they are the faults of humanity, not the USA. The difference is, we overcome our faults. Her statement is proof that the election of Obama was meant as a symbolic victory only. It was never about the content of his character.

So nice to know that this staunch patriot would rather bow to the whim of world opinion, that she cares more about what her elite friends overseas think of her based on her nationality, than she would stand up for the principles of the constitution and speak out about the great strides this country has made in the last 40 years, evidenced by the latest election. I thought this election wasn’t about race Maya? This election should be a vindication for all those that said we shouldn’t have to elect a black president just because he’s black to prove we aren’t racists. It’s like the tale of the accused witch thrown into the river to see if she floats like wood. When she drowns the villagers say she must not have been a witch. Well, we’re about to drown.

She should apologize for taking a six-figure salary from Wake Forest University for all those years.
