Despite a record number of registered voters this year, intense interest in the presidential election and the historic outcome, Ohio's voter turnout was lower Tuesday than in 2004, unofficial statistics show.
Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner is reporting 67 percent turnout, compared with 72 percent in 2004. She had been predicting 80 percent turnout this time.
The percentage could increase as provisional ballots, overseas ballots and other outstanding votes are included during the official canvass in the coming weeks.
But overall turnout still is expected to be lower than in 2004, leaving experts at a loss to explain it -- especially because the number of registered voters increased by 319,000 from four years ago.
"That's rather puzzling, given the activity level," said Paul Beck, a political-science professor at Ohio State University.

We did not get beat by an extraordinary registration or voter turnout effort on the democratic side. We got beat because we lost a significant number of voters who were with us in 2004. Ultimately, I don’t think organization, the fundraising disadvantage, or even the biased media cost us this election. What cost the election is the failure to present a compelling case on the important issues of the day.

Sorry I’m a little touchy. This election has me completely bummed. My only point is that Brunner and ACORN were blatantly trying to steal the election in Ohio and I don’t trust anything that comes from her this election.
This comports with what Freeper LS reported from his precincts. If what he reported holds for the counties mentioned in the article, a lot of those "red" county republicans actually voted for "the One." Strangest election ever. Did self-hating conservatives vote for Obama to atone for some obscure sins? Also, it seems, the base simply didn't turn out. Palin drew in many, but not enough win.
Obama probably got out the same vote that Kerry did. Mc Cain clearly didn’t have the Rove ground game of 04 and came up way short. If I can share my own feelings. I am disappointed that Obama will be the next President, but I am not disappointed that Mc Cain wont. I like a lot of conservatives voted against Obama and not for Mc Cain. The good news about all of this is Conservatives now have a chance to take back their party and boot the RINO’s to the sidelines.
I look at it this way. I survived a President who was assasinated, an assasinated presidental candidate, a assasinated civil rights leader, anit-war riots, civil rights riots, a sexual revolution, a Presidential resignation, an unpopular war in SE Asia, Jimmy Carter, Reagan being shot, Iran/Contra, Watergate, Impeachment, the Clinton years, a country that should have welcomed our liberation but didn't, 9/11 attacks and so much more. And yet despite that I'm still here and kicking.
In many ways, we are better than we were at any time during those crisis situations. In some cases we aren't.

It always makes me laugh when, with our massive, ever-changing, and complex economy, we think it's all about the man in the Oval Office. The truth is, economies go up and they go down—and then they go up again. By their very nature they are cyclical. When they're strong, the President gets too much applause, and when they slump he's buried in way too much blame. And so, in that vein, for the winning voters on Wednesday morning November 5, how dangerous these thoughts would be: "Yes! My guy won! Now I'll have a better job and more income and good finances and perfect health and a happier life and ... !"
Really? Does the POTUS have that much power, influence, and control? Would we, in a democracy, want him to? Can he give and take away joy? Will he help me get my personal finances in order? Will his tenure improve my relationships or keep me in shape? Do I really need my guy to be in the Oval Office for me to excel at my work, love and provide for my family, and contribute to the lives of others?
The POTUS has very little ‘good’ influence over the economy. However a committed marxist in the WH with a brainless majority in Congress that’s more and more extreme left have a HUGE capacity to do bad! They can kill capitalism if they try hard enough. Look what Bush, Paulson, Bernanke and Congress have already done.
I keep on hearing Republicans stayed home but what if it is just the absentee ballots haven’t been counted yet?
I just found out confirmation from my Secretary of State that absentee ballots are being counted now. Massachusetts has until November 19th to submit certified results.
So, the results MSM released do not include absentee ballots for all states. Don’t you think more people this year than ever before voted absentee because they saw the long lines and waits on the TV? I did and I voted absentee.
How many other states are now counting the absentee ballots? Most if not all. How will this impact the final result? So should we say unofficial President Elect? Should someone clue the media in?

my grad school statistics professor used to have to explain the difference between percent difference and percentage point difference to some kids until he was blue in the face!
I remember the same phenomenon taking a logic 101 class in college (which was part of the required core at the time.) The prof seemed to get frustrated at times. Honestly, at times it sounded like he was trying to explain things to grade school students.
I thought it was the simpilist, most straightforward class I took in college, but I remember much of the class complaining that it was one of the most difficult.
Yes, but when you compare the numbers, McCain was the one who had the biggest shortfall by far. In 2004, Bush received 2,859,768 votes and Kerry 2,741,167. So far, McCain has 2,464,104 versus Obama's 2,662,951. Thus McCain had 400,000 less votes than Bush and Obama just 180,000 less than Kerry.
McCain was a deeply flawed candidate. If you nominate the party's maverick as your standard bearer, there are political consequences. McCain spent most of his time campaigning against his own party. Loyalty begets loyalty.

McCain, like Dole, never explained why he wanted to be President and what he would do if elected.
