Rep. Chris Smith, the Republican who has represented New Jersey's 4th District in the House since 1981, beat Democrat Josh Zeitz.
With 99 percent of the votes collected, Smith had 66 percent and Zeitz 32 percent.
Also challenging Smith was Steven Welzer of East Windsor, the candidate of the Green Party.
Smith, of Hamilton, is a member of the House Foreign Affairs committee and has a reputation as a champion of human rights around the world. He is also a strong opponent of abortion. Zeitz, of Bordentown, attacked Smith for his abortion stand and sought to link him to Bush administration policies on the economy and Iraq.
The 4th District includes parts of Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Conservatives win, McCain loses. What does that tell you? That the Republicans have to be more “progressive”?
ping to NJ FReepers
Burlington and Mercer went for Obama. Nevertheless, Smith's district includes only a tiny sliver of the former, and the southeeastern part of the other (Hamilton, Robbinsville and Highstown to be precise).
That area is more conservative ... it varies in NJ.
Chris Smith is a good guy. I’m hoping Bret Shundler makes a run for it. I would personally want to be in on the ground floor and work my tush off for him. I agree with EVERYTHING he stands for.
NJ is now the eastern most state for Republicanism in the USA.
NJ’s voters put a good delegation back to DC this time, much to happy for in the coming years.
The only loss that hurt was to Adler, that nanny-statist who banned smoking in NJ.
Congrats to Smith!
For a blue state, NJ is very well represented with conservatives in the house.
Our Senate representation sucks as bad as any other state's, however.
Oooops! I wish! Congressman Garrett is not a senator.
Yet.
Republicans need to make vocal conservative leadership a priority if they want to survive as a party. I don’t give them much of a chance of seeing the light. Look for the rise of a strong conservative 3rd party during Obama’s presidency.
How much did Lautenberg win by? Did he run against Zimmer?
Well, my guy got re-elected. Scott Garrett.
He was one of the 45 or so that voted against the bailout. I think the bailout was a mistake...my congressman feels the same way.
Even though NJ is blue, it’s only that way because the pop centers of Newark and the NYC metro areas vote lib for some reason. I don’t understand why density = Vote Democrat.
Own land, vote conservative, live in an apt, vote demon. I suppose that a D vote is so you can stick it to the bastard that makes your food. I don’t suggest it makes sense.
The corpse won 56-43% over Zimmer.
Exactly.
Chris smith may be a republican and pro-life but he is no conservative. This past year he received a score of 47% by the ACU, He received a D rating from the NRA, is against drilling in ANWAR, votes for big budgets, etc.
Don’t forget about Congressman LoBiondo in district 2. Same thing goes...I would say he is very conservative and wins time after time.
JoMa
Did big spender Linda Stender lose?
