At a meeting in NBC News' DC bureau today, bureau chief Mark Whitaker made a renewed plea to staffers to take the network's buyout package, sources tell FishbowlDC.
The buyout offer has been an option for a while now, as part of NBC Universal's plan to trim $500 million from its budget, but, here in DC, few employees have taken it.
Whitaker told staffers that, if anyone's thinking of retiring, to please reconsider taking the buyout package. Staffers have one week to decide. As often happens in these staff-trimming situations, layoffs will likely occur if NBC does not reach its target cuts via the buyout program.

That’s how they do in the corporate world. They usually pay their managers of departments about 1,000 dollars per head to get them to take packages.

Yes, layoffs to follow. Hopefully a significant layoff. How will NBC News respond with its product line? Could CNBC or MSNBC get the ax?
In my opinion, NBC news and MSNBC will become one and dramatically shrink. The main network will go online only and won’t ‘broadcast’ as we have known over the years. Programming and news will be available for download or viewing.

I don’t get all this talk about the dying old media. Did anybody here witness what happened on Tuesday? An unqualified socialist was elected president of the United States in a not very close election. This man was manufactured by the media. I’m afraid the death of the media and their influence on society has been greatly exaggerated.
Exactly. I don’t watch CNN, Fox or any other news programs. They are just unbalanced with no value whatsoever.

You’ve apparently not been paying attention to these threads.
The Dinosaur Media is not dead nor have I ever said it was. I’ve never minimized their power - it is vast and will be for some time. That’s why the threads are DeathWATCH™ instead of DeathWAKE.
However, the wrenching financial changes that newspapers and television are now undergoing are secular and they are huge. The internet is a technologically superior information distribution system to paper and electronic broadcast. They won’t be able to economically compete for much longer.
These threads are my attempt to chronicle what is happening.

You got it. No matter what problems they have, lumped together the 3 networks reach tons of people. And hammer them relentlessly with their pro-left, pro-Dem views.
Even if they “die,” they will be replaced by others who are just as bad. That’s what’s out there, after all.
