I think this question was pretty well settled in 1865.

Mmmm... not so much. All it settled was whether a Federal government acting illegally could hold states in the Union by force, and of course the answer was “yes”.
Thing is, this time around, the North doesn’t have the industry or the military resources. All of the productive industry is in the South. So are the major remaining military bases.

There's often some chatter that Texas can legally secede but I've never found any language, anywhere, that supports that. Parenthetically there is a great thread from 2001 on secession here:

I might also add that the prospect of Texas being able to split into multiple states seems to be a canard as well.
