The Shallowest Generation

The Baby Boom Generation will never be mistaken for the Greatest Generation that survived the Great Depression and defeated evil in a World War that killed 72 million people. I hate to tell you Boomers, but putting a yellow ribbon on the back of your $50,000 SUV is not sacrifice. Our claim to fame is living way beyond our means for the last three decades, to the point where we have virtually bankrupted our capitalist system. Baby Boomers have been occupying the White House for the last sixteen years. The majority of Congress is Baby Boomers. The CEOs and top executives of Wall Street firms are Baby Boomers. The media is dominated by Baby Boom executives and on-air stars. We have no one to blame but ourselves for the current predicament. Blaming Franklin Roosevelt or Lyndon Johnson for our dire situation is a cop out. Baby Boomers had the time, power, and ability to change our course. We have chosen to leave the heavy lifting to future generations in order to live the good life today.

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other." - John Adams, Oct. 11, 1798

How’s that for rebelling against the previous generation?

I'd say "good on ya" and I'm a boomer.

On the other hand, there are a great number of your generation that have grown up spoiled by affluence.

The years ahead will be a corrective to that.

Yeah, disco sucked & I hate to take the blame for it, but most of everything that followed it wasn't anything to write home about either.

Thank you for the first all-out chuckle I've had all night long.

Based on Birth Years, Ayers definitely a leading edge Boomer, Wright a Silent-Boomer "Tweener" based on Strauss & Howe(the guys that popularized the terminology).

Based on their own criteria, the Boomer "generation" should be split. Both their starting dates & ending dates are irrational.

The generation birth dates should be seen only as guidelines. Individuals born in the same time period merely share a common history- or instance, the events occurring in their early formative years and the conditions of the workplace upon entering (e.g. economy, labor market).

We're talking the economic conditions of 1962, through all of the Carter years & into the first half of the Reagan years. Those born in 44 had a very different "common history" during their formative years than the greatest share of boomers.

Birth rates hit their high in the latter half of the "generation", so for most boomers, getting front row seats to the break down of many American institutions is far different than participating in it.

Yes, this generational analysis stuff hasn't exactly achieved the level of Hard Science in any publications that I'm familiar with.

On the other hand, there is a lot of interesting group behavioral dynamics (network theory) that could benefit from more-intense study.

It's more pop culture than science. Someone up thread mentioned astrology. Last time I came across one of these type of articles on FR, I told someone he will forever be a Chucky Schumer, because he's flying the flag of New York on his homepage. I'm from Wisconsin, so I'm naturally a dolt & may go off on some bazaar serial murdering rampage any day now. ;o)

Bottom line, any generalization will be wrong more often than right.

On the other hand, there is a lot of interesting group behavioral dynamics (network theory) that could benefit from more-intense study.

It would be a much better way to go about trying to figure out more rational groupings.
