CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The McCain campaign is trying to sway coal state voters by selectively quoting from a 10-month-old interview to allege that Obama plans to "bankrupt the coal industry" with his plan to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin kicked off the last-minute attack Sunday during an appearance in Marietta, Ohio. At about the same time, clips of select portions of Obama's January comments to the San Francisco Chronicle surfaced on conservative blogs and Web sites.
But Obama campaign officials, and Chronicle editors, said the Illinois senator's remarks were taken greatly out of context.
And, the "cap-and-trade" carbon dioxide control plan Obama advocates is one of the generally accepted proposals for trying to deal with climate change - and a plan that Republican John McCain has also embraced.
Joseph Romm, a former Clinton Energy Department official and physicist who writes the Climate Progress blog, conceded "an inartful choice of words by Obama."
"But fundamentally, his remarks reflect an accurate understanding of the impact - indeed, the goal - of serious climate regulations, if we ever get around to them," Romm wrote in a Monday-morning blog post.
During a Jan. 17 interview with the Chronicle's editorial board, an editorial writer noted that Obama co-sponsored a bill to encourage turning coal into liquid fuel for vehicles, an approach energy experts warn would likely create more greenhouse emissions than traditional gasoline. The editorial writer asked Obama how he squar

“in artfull”?
Bwahaahha...idiots..
“10 month old comments” That’s a laugh I guess to the pathetically inexperienced Obama 10 months is like ten years would be to a man with a real record.
That's some strong Kool-Aid his followers are drinking.
The Obamacorns are right! We should not believe our own lyin’ ears! We need to believe them!!! Then! Maybe the Obama will save us too! And buy us a tank of gas and pay our mortgage!
Should Hussein become President (sick), the MVP award goes to the MSM. Without over the top bias, Hussein would not be a viable candidate. If the media treated Hussein like Palin or Joe the Plumber, then Hussein wouldn’t make it pass Iowa.
The problem with saying that Palin is twisting his words is that there is audio and video for folks to witness his exact words. Not surprisingly, his exact words are the way Palin explained.
What’s he going to say now? “That’s not the Barack Obama I once knew?”
Yeah, get used to it...Obama will NEVER take any responsibility for something said. It will always be that the listener was dumb and got it wrong. Everything is always out of context and the listener had evil-intent and twisted his words (like messing up Biblical text)...Besides, if you didn’t go to Harvard Law, you don’t listen to NPR, or you don’t live in San Francisco, you are too stupid to understand the subtle details of what’s being discussed. So, just shut up and pay up...
We have always been at war with Eastasia, citizen.
I wish they threw the kitchen sink at Obama, but I guess if that were the case Biden would be the Democrats candidate now.
LOL - he’s gonna throw himself under the bus! LOL

“Anybody who doesn’t believe that Obama intends to undermine the U.S.’s strength and freedom in every way he can is deluded. He has made it quite clear.
That’s some strong Kool-Aid his followers are drinking”
As Newt Gingrich said, this about shutting down coal, sending electricity costs way up: this would DISRUPT THE ECONOMY. Obama ain’t even thinking on this OR is following what his mentors are saying.
If this news hit even earlier last week, it would have made a difference in some key states - it still may. It isn’t just the coal facilities, it’s the mines, the transportation - Rail and Ships - all railroad crafts, merchant marines, dredging of channels throughout the Great Lakes, all the towns, counties, school systems that leach from those businesses and their workers, not to mention the western coal and it’s transportation. Ships run ‘both ways’ on the Great Lakes carrying coal one way and iron ore (and grain) on the return trips. Cut that profit in half. Then there’s all the support industries - dry docks, steel, boiler makers, welders.... sigh... Hope those workers get the message.
Not surprising since his followers will say most anything, just like he and Biden will.
Can’t sleep tonight, anyway, the battle continues win or lose...we need to allow constitutional law run its course as well, I don’t even know if B.0. is a legal candidate still; but no matter what, we need to continue asserting American values in the land.
To mcdowelfbm: The Gazette is the most bias newspaper in the country? Are you saying even more bias than the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle which held this news from everyone since January?I looked for this story this morning and couldn't find it in the online edition. When I checked back, it was here.
I'm assuming it took some time for all involved in it's creation to figure out how to spin the story so BO would not be hurt politically.
My advice for people who want the truth: listen to the tape or watch the video. You won't find a whole bunch of truth in this article though.
“Should Hussein become President (sick), the MVP award goes to the MSM. Without over the top bias, Hussein would not be a viable candidate. If the media treated Hussein like Palin or Joe the Plumber, then Hussein wouldnt make it pass Iowa.”
It’s so apalling, the msm. I wonder if enough people who vote tomorrow realize that if Hussein wins we’re going to be flooded with new muslims at a much higher rate becaue they will be emboldened? If that sounds racist go to London and tell me how that worked out for them. I have been there several times since 2005. It’s over for England and most of Europe, seriosuly. Oh well, I guess at least being a 41 year old man I saw a lot of good times in America.
So we’ve taken his remarks out of context, eh?
Which part of “will bankrupt you” have we taken out?
The “will” part; or the “bankrupt you” part?
