When Richard Nixon closed the Gold Window in February of 1973, that action severed the last remaining string tying the Dollar to Gold.
What replaced Gold?
OIL - The Petro-Dollar.
All major players in the OIL market have agreed to sell OIL in Dollars. Anybody who wants to buy oil must do so with Dollars; and this arrangement is what creates the international demand for the Dollar - and props up the VALUE of the Dollar.
It's the reason China and other countries buy our T-Bills.
If the Petro-Dollar dies, the Dollar dies with it, and THAT would not be good for the United States of America, or the world.
Now imagine the housing bubble imploding on top of the externally directed destruction of the Dollar. The present economic landscape would likely have been far, FAR worse.
Protection of the Petro-Dollar's hegemony; that alone was reason enough to remove Saddam.
Most US Citizens agree the United States should move towards energy independence - thus severing our dependence upon OPEC and their ability to hold the Dollar, and our economy, hostage; but If the Petro-Dollar's hegemony is not protected, our economic infrastructure will collapse before we can reach that goal.
The Technological Infrastructure depends upon the Economic Infrastructure; Just ask the Soviets.
Without both of these components, we will not be able to commercialize the technology required for sustainable energy; for energy independence.
So, the Petro-Dollar must be protected until we can achieve our goal of energy independence.
Protecting the Petro-Dollar means maintaining a forceful military presence in the Middle East.
McCain understands this. Obama does not
Obama has no plan to protect the Dollar.
Thus, John McCain is the lesser weevil on our plate - and remember, you must always choose the lesser of two weevils.
Regardless of who wins, please join me in pledging to do your best to make that man the best POTUS he can be.

Protection of the Petro-Dollar's hegemony; that alone was reason enough to remove Saddam. Agreed. That's the money quote. Bears repeating. And, now Iran HAS tried to start its own bourse; reason enough for regime change there.
But no worries, Mighty Mouse (er, Pres. Obambi) has come to save the day; he'll TALK the mullahs into submission.[/s]
