Well God Bless Mrs. Jones! I'm not going to ridicule her for her vote. She's looking at this with an entirely different perspective than many of us. It was probably inconceivable to her father, as a former slave, and her, growing up in a segregated America, that a black man would EVER be nominated for the Presidency, and I'm sure she's voting for Obama out of pride.

Granted, his policies won't help black people, but that's not what she's thinking about right now, in fact she probably thinks just the opposite. She's just filled with pride for her race, and I won't belittle that emotion.

If, as you say, slavery is wrong, and I do believe that also, then it has to be, and have been, wrong for all of humanity for all time not just America. So, go right ahead and live by your double standard. It won’t be any skin off my nose because I know your double standard is spelled h-y-p-o-c-r-i-t-e. One soft standard for everyone else, one hard standard for this land you supposedly love. Btw, I am not attacking you for “thinking slavery is wrong”, just your selective application of your belief. If that makes me “ignorant”, so be it. I just want America, and her peoples, to be judged by the same measure as the rest of the world, and I will stand by that position till the day the Lord takes me home.

This gets a modest discussion in the book “A Voyage Long And Strange” by Tony Hurwitz (sp?)

That was an interesting book, made even MORE so by his comments at the beginning that, even though he MAJORED in History at Columbia Univ., he didn't learn about the history of American before the Puritans arrived. Apparently, he didn't know about the Vikings arriving in the early part of the last millineum, nor about the Spanish explorers going all the way across the Southern half of what would later be the United States.

I'd say his History Degree from the vaunted Columbia was pretty pi$$ poor.

You know, you are starting to tick me off.
Slavery is wrong, no matter where it occurs.
Don’t give me this “land you supposedly love” crap. I love my country with every cell of my being.

So she's been a Democrat since the days they were the party of Jim Crown and the Klan?

Not only that, blacks were not allowed to vote in the Democrat Primary in Texas until well into the 50's.

This a fact. The dems of 1874 and before were the ones who started the KKK.

I'll take the minority view here, I understand why she feels good and hold no ill will toward her for doing so.

Now there's about 60 million other Americans I won't be so gracious about.

Neither do I. Libs are the ones with the white guilt syndrome not me.. How much more can be done to kiss their asses over something that our ancestors did. To be honest. A white middle class conservative man and woman will decide this election. Now we are the minority.

You know, you are starting to tick me off.

I'm sorry, that wasn't my intent.

Slavery is wrong, no matter where it occurs.

Well, we do agree on that one fact.

Don’t give me this “land you supposedly love” crap. I love my country with every cell of my being.

I don't know you, but I will take your word on your assertion of love of country. The only thing that baffles me is how you can make a remark that condemns America for practicing a condition that was in practice in every nation in the world throughout all of known history without a similar condemnation of those others who practiced the same. If you had said slavery is scar on humanity, I wouldn't have taken issue with it, but your statement indicted America only.

Look, I am sorry if I have ruffled your feathers. I am just having a very hard time reconciling your two positions, positions I find quite contradictory. I am also sorry for being snarky and flippant in my posts to you. I should have been more respectful of a fellow FReeper, but I get riled when I feel like this country that I love is being unfairly judged in relation to the rest of the world. This will be my last post on this subject as it is too volatile to continue, and I want to end it with my apology. Good night,

Surtur

I do give Horwitz credit for being open enough to notice his
Ivy League history degree didn’t give him “the rest of the story”.
It was interesting to read his rambling around Coronado Heights and
the Lindsborg, KS area; as a child I suspect our family camped out
in that area on at least on five or six summer vacations.

If you missed it, you can see/hear his BookTV presentation by punching the
red Watch Now button at this link.
(even my cranky dial-up gives me decent audio with a jerky series
of stills)

As a person of Slavic ancestry, I'm sick and tired of the words "slave" and "slavery" being so callously batted around without any consideration whatsoever given to the deep pain and hurt it causes me and my people.

I wants my reparations!! (Although a small royalty for every use of the word when applied to non-slavic peoples would be up for negotiation.)

Thanks for that link! I actually didn’t get a chance to finish the book before I had to return it to the library, but I plan to check it out again, after I finish the three or four books I have out right now. ;o)
