IMPROPTU PALIN VISIT TREATS DAUPHIN BOROUGH (Nice story)
Penn Live ^ | 11-02-08 | Victor

On any trick-or-treat night, you can expect to see a bit of the unexpected.

What the residents of tiny Dauphin borough didn't expect, though, was to find a fleet of TV cameras show up on their doorsteps, followed by two burly men wearing suits and earpieces, followed by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, her husband and their daughter.

No, it wasn't Tina Fey or any other Palin impersonator. The Republican vice presidential candidate stopped in the blink-and-you'll-miss-it town off Route 322 on Friday night to take her daughter Piper out for candy.

And none of the residents, not even the Borough Council members, knew they were coming. Palin had been in York earlier in the day.

When Palin approached David Book on his front porch, he thought it must have been some kind of strange "Saturday Night Live" skit. He stared in disbelief, and she smiled back.

"Governor Palin?" he asked, bewildered.

"Yes?" she responded with a smile.

Book gave Piper, dressed as a snow princess, a granola bar and then asked Palin if she wanted one, too.

"I whispered, 'It's all healthy snacks like granola bars,'" he said. "She said, 'Oh, good.'"

Though Book is an independent voter who plans to vote for Democrat Barack Obama, he said he was excited to meet Palin and to hear from his brother that he and his house were shown on Fox News.

A few doors down on Erie Street, Derek Stence, a local councilman, couldn't believe his eyes as Piper climbed the steps of his porch, followed a few steps behind by her parents.

Stence answered the door with his grandson Joseph Fagan, and Palin asked how old he was as she touched his head. A bit frazzled by the unexpected visit, Stence blurted out that he was 6 months old -- even though he's actually just 3 months old, and Stence knows that very well.

He gave Piper a Tootsie Roll and had a quick chat with Todd Palin before they went to the next house.

"I am never lost for words," he said. "But I was just like: Uh, uh ..." he said.

Stence said he's a big John McCain supporter; he had several McCain-Palin signs aside pumpkins and American flags as decorations outside his house.

But regardless of politics, it was one of the most exciting events in Dauphin's history, he said.

"People were just running down the street after her," said Joan Stence. "It was like Elvis came back alive, here in our town."

Did anyone else look up the “dauphin”? Before the internet I always wondered what that meant.

I saw some video of that. It was really cute. Apparently they’d asked the Mayor of the town if Piper could go Trick or Treating. So sweet of them to do that for Piper. I’m sure she would have understood if they hadn’t gone out, but it’s fun for kids her age to have that normal activity amid all the hoopla surrounding the campaign.

And notice how he was an “independent”, implying a thoughtful, reasonable voter who decides based on issues instead of “blindly” following a particular political party.

My ass.

“Moderates” and “independents” are groundless, empty-headed, lazy buffoons.

Hey there- Feel a liitle sorry for Piper.Precocious kid-I’m sure she hears everything going on in the campaign. I saw her with Hannity, and she barely spoke. Probably shy, maybe its losing the front teeth-but I couldn’t help but think she been told not to say anything. Sad because it seems she has so much to say. -:)

Wow, I see it just the opposite, she seems so into the campaign as little girl. Kinda reminds me of my daughter and how she would have reacted in the same situation, young in age, but wise beyond her years. I don't feel sorry for Piper at all, she has so much to be proud of, and I'm sure she'll look back at this time, and be so very amazed at what her Mommy has accomplished.

The Secret Service sure has had an interesting time with Sarah. A visit to Wal-mart to purchase diapers and now trick or treating.
