As far as I know, illegals are not eligible for welfare or anything other than emergency medical services. However, social workers in many states do not ask for verification of status before signing them up for free handouts.

According to the Boston Globe, her application for housing was approved in 2003 and she was classified as an “eligible asylum seeker” at the time. Her application for permanent status wasn’t denied until the following year.

Apparently public housing in MA doesn’t update status with the INS.
