Kennedy: The yolk's on Aggie student group after 'Anti-Obama Carnival’
Fort Worth Star-Telegram ^ | November 2, 2008 | Bud Kennedy

We knew that sooner or later in this American presidential campaign, somebody was going to do something really stupid.

We might have guessed where:

College Station.

Now, a Texas A&M student group known as the class clowns of conservatism has staged a stunt that even their own faculty adviser calls "really dumb."

The A&M chapter of the Waco-based Young Conservatives of Texas sponsored an egg toss Wednesday and again Friday.

But not just your typical Aggie barnyard egg toss. A&M students were offered a chance to hurl eggs at a giant photo of Barack Obama.

It was all part of a messy little campus publicity stunt called an "Anti-Obama Carnival" — with the Soviet hammer and sickle added inside the "O" in Obama.

A Young Conservative from Midland told a Bryan TV station that the events were meant as a free-speech political protest where students could — in the words of the official carnival T-shirt — "throw away your nest-egg with Obama’s economic policies."

A surly student crowd saw them smearing Obama’s photo Wednesday with dozens of spattered eggs and surrounded the Rudder Plaza "carnival" to scramble it with more free speech.

The YCT is more archconservative and libertarian than the campus Republicans, he noted: "The most complaints come from the College Republicans. Every time the Young Conservatives do something stupid, it’s the Republicans who get embarrassed."

Texas A&M President Elsa Murano issued a statement defending the Young Conservatives’ freedom of speech, then blasting the carnival toss as "contrary to the core values of Aggies everywhere." She called for more "respectful" debate.

After the second carnival Friday, Listi said by phone that he considered the week a "success." He said the event was meant "to spark some controversy and draw attention."

But it might have broken more than eggs.

Big congrats to TT for putting the OWNAGE on the t-sips... I love it when t.u. is knocked down a few pegs. I’m looking forward to TAMU’s J. Johnson putting the hurt on the sips on Thanksgiving... for our 3rd win in a row over the burnt orange bloods.

This was just a dumb stunt, bad taste, that’s all. Stuff like this doesn’t win any votes.

Please explain to me why this was in bad taste and why it was dumb. I think it's funny and creative, and I don't feel it crosses any lines.

Bud Kelly, if he graduated from college at all, and not a trade-school for journalists, no doubt went to school in the Peoples' Republic of Austin, where the lone star is reddest...

I've read this article twice, and must be missing something.
Where is the egregious behavior?

Any criticism of Obama will be seen as a racial hate crime.

Seen as? How about "PROSECUTED AS"!

"“PC is the serpents subtile weapon...”

Rather unsubtle one actually, but in any case, this is not a point about PC. This is about light and dark, right and wrong."

See, that light and dark thing is what he was talking about when he wrote "sub-tile"... under the tile - that's where the dark things live!

A better approach would be ridicule.

The devil cannot abide scorn.

Well I first came upon it in the foreward to the “Screwtape letters” by the one and only CS Lewis. I thought it was a quote from “paradise lost”, but maybe it was Luthor. Have to check that out.
