Kennedy: The yolk's on Aggie student group after 'Anti-Obama Carnival’
Fort Worth Star-Telegram ^ | November 2, 2008 | Bud Kennedy

Posted on 11/02/2008 7:16:18 PM PST by fgoodwin

We knew that sooner or later in this American presidential campaign, somebody was going to do something really stupid.

We might have guessed where:

College Station.

Now, a Texas A&M student group known as the class clowns of conservatism has staged a stunt that even their own faculty adviser calls "really dumb."

The A&M chapter of the Waco-based Young Conservatives of Texas sponsored an egg toss Wednesday and again Friday.

But not just your typical Aggie barnyard egg toss. A&M students were offered a chance to hurl eggs at a giant photo of Barack Obama.

It was all part of a messy little campus publicity stunt called an "Anti-Obama Carnival" — with the Soviet hammer and sickle added inside the "O" in Obama.

A Young Conservative from Midland told a Bryan TV station that the events were meant as a free-speech political protest where students could — in the words of the official carnival T-shirt — "throw away your nest-egg with Obama’s economic policies."

A surly student crowd saw them smearing Obama’s photo Wednesday with dozens of spattered eggs and surrounded the Rudder Plaza "carnival" to scramble it with more free speech.

The YCT is more archconservative and libertarian than the campus Republicans, he noted: "The most complaints come from the College Republicans. Every time the Young Conservatives do something stupid, it’s the Republicans who get embarrassed."

Texas A&M President Elsa Murano issued a statement defending the Young Conservatives’ freedom of speech, then blasting the carnival toss as "contrary to the core values of Aggies everywhere." She called for more "respectful" debate.

After the second carnival Friday, Listi said by phone that he considered the week a "success." He said the event was meant "to spark some controversy and draw attention."

But it might have broken more than eggs.

From the headline and lead paragraphs you’d be lead to believe that they had done some sort of racist blackface thing.

Political speech in the county is dead now. The Left can censor at will.

No. Nobody got suspended. And A&M is a very conservative campus.

This was just a dumb stunt, bad taste, that’s all. Stuff like this doesn’t win any votes.

Just wait til the Obama "Civilian Security Force" is put into action. These displays will not be tolerated by our Dear Leader. Any students engaging in such actions will be dealt with severely.

Course, we could save ourselves having to find out exactly: What does Obama mean by "security"?-, by NOT giving him the power of the presidency.

PLEASE PEOPLE- GO OUT AND VOTE MCCAIN/PALIN TUESDAY. AND PRAY.

All that’s need here is a little reframing. The group should counter that they were just challenging social norms in order to start a dialog and raise awareness.

Here's where you've probably been brainwashed. Only conservatives are restricted by the norms of taste - and that's by design. The goal is to make opposition to liberal/left-wing ideology impossible by hampering any criticism of it by hypocritical appeals to "taste" or "propriety". It's a way of getting you to fight with both your arms tied around your back while they get to use tire irons. They get to morph President Bush's face with a chimpanzee, while throwing eggs at a picture of Obama is a beyond the pale.

I'm with you!! Sounds like good clean fun, and a harmless way to protest/vent. Man, these people act like muslims who have had the picture of mohammad displayed and thrown eggs at. What do these high and mighty college admin’s have to say about all the abuse the President has laughed and ignored over the last 8 years?

Get a grip, he isn't REALLY any Messiah.

From Aggies? ROFLMAO.

Respect must be earned. Aggies can show respect... after you hit 'em in the head a few times with a two by four. Or make 'em drop and give you twenty, a few dozen times.

But when the shooting starts, you want Aggies on your side.

Utterly tame compared to the abject violence both promoted and perpetrated at liberal/leftest/communist/whatsthedifference rallies. If I were the group there, though, I’d have included some TV monitors playing nonstop for everyone what happens at ANSWER and other similar rallies for comparison’s sake. Maybe they could have sold “liberal lemonade” at their carnival since as P.J. O’Rourke said “Liberalism is just communism sold by the drink.”

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed my summer spent up at College Station. It was seriously kickass to walk into engineering class in the morning, find the students talking politics, and have virtually all of them to be conservatives. Yeah, there are lefty professors and students as there are everywhere, but TAMU is the biggest generally conservative school in the country I’m sure. UT is terribly liberal like most schools (Austin...*rolls eyes*). I root for both of them, though, but I did find myself pleasantly surprised by A&M after having grown up with all the stereotypical Aggie jokes. :P

Had they simply exercised their free speech like this, all would be well in academia and among the media.

I don't recommend trying that in Aggiland. At least anywhere near the Corps of Cadets.

Those guys once grabbed some artillery and a train, over a dispute at a football game. Governor had to call out the militia to stop 'em from blowing up the other school.

But that was back in the good (very) old days.

Aggies are without a doubt some of the best people on the planet.

Texas A&M is one of the best schools in America.

I’m a Texas Tech Red Raider and I’m PROUD to go to bat for A&M at times like this.
