End of "Cold War" a disservice (vanity)

Posted on 11/02/2008 5:09:47 PM PST by WKUHilltopper

I'm starting to believe the end of the Cold War has been a disservice primarily because an entire generation (well, many at least) wouldn't know what Marxism is if it bit them on the butt. Some of the "slogans", "sayings" and "topics" used in this Obama campaign comes right out of the Communist Manifesto--not to mention some of the posters and placards which are incredible throw backs from the hey days of Red Square parades. And the "plans", killing off economic growth, industries, etc!

Am I living in a bad Twilight Zone episode??

I'm hoping someone will start a pool on vanities for Tuesday.

Perhaps separate pools for total vanities for 24 hour period, one for over/under, one for most vanities by one poster in same period.

Maybe even one for dumbest (but who would judge it?).

The Cold War is over? Good. Now those capitalist pigs will pay for their crimes.

I know, it seems to me that there are many people who see the Cold War as ancient history. Myself, I remember it quite well, but I’m 42 years old.

I still occasionally call that big country with Moscow as the capital "The Soviet Union" instead of Russia even though the Soviet Union has been gone for 17 years.

A local radio talk host says the fall of the Soviet Union was bad for us because we no longer have them around as a bad example. It was much easier to show socialism as bad when it involved a multi-hour line to get a few half-rotten beets in the USSR.

Sometimes I still call Russia, "the Soviet Union" as well. I do lament the passing of the Cold War for the same reasons as you, they were the template of "the bad example" and "what not to do" as well as "do you want to live there?" I know we still have North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela but they do not have the power the Soviets had or the visibility. Bo would not even gotten through the primates, if that, if the USSR was still around. I don't even Bill Clinton would have passed muster.

Yeah...
I was pissed the commies threw in the towel while I was in HS...made me actually mad. Yes, angry I didn’t get my turn show the flag in the Fulda Gap..(Yes, it’s where I wanted my career path to go...)...That and man...they made such great villains.

Seriously...it did focus young people...and it reminded the baby boomers what they had almost handed US over to.

Don't forget that it made all those poor writer for RPG games scramble to come up with ways to plunge the world into an apocalypse. I mean they have had to rewrite "Twilight: 2000" into "Dark Conspiracy" and "Merc: 2000" then later, "Twilight: 2013." Even if the Cold War was still on, you can always update the same scenario with different names and weapons upgrades. Same with "The Morrow Project." B-D

True. There was a side of me that was hoping that we'd see something like in "The Simpsons" where the Russian Ambassidor would flip the sign over to read "Soviet Union" and you'd see the Red Army marching in Red Square again, that way, except for the hardcore barking moonbats, most people will see what we could turn into.

Simpsons - Russia to USSR
