With four days to the presidential election, Republican John McCain intensified his underdog message in must-win Ohio on Friday, trailing in the polls but promising "we're coming back" in the race against front-running Democrat Barack Obama.
Obama has opened his lead in the polls by relentlessly linking his opponent to the unpopular President George W. Bush, a fellow Republican who is heavily blamed for the U.S. financial crisis, and whom voters perceive as the better choice to turn around the economy.

“Its pretty easy to make a list of people that can be blamed before Bush.”
Well, Clinton and Bush I for instance, along with the Democrat and liberal Republican Congressmen.
“You might try starting with yourself.”
????
I voted for Bush I under duress. The alternative was that dwarf from Massachusetts. I supportred Bush I against Clinton despite his pathetic campaign. I supported Dole despite HIS equally pathetic campaign. I voted for Alan Keyes in the Republican Primary for Bush II’s first run because I didn’t trust Bush II after his father pathetic performance, then supported him against Gore. I supported Bush II against Kerry - no alternatives. And here I find myself supporting McCain because I really can’t stand Obama and secretly hope McCain wins and then has to leave office after Palin gets a little experience under her belt.
What did I do wrong??
If Obama gets in, Americans very well will regret Bush II is gone. MAYBE. The Dems have demonstrated they are simply far better at propaganda than the Repubs are and will blame EVERYTHING on Bush II.
But pollsters - if they mean anything - have consistently stated Bush II’s numbers are the lowest in recent history - although eclipsed in poor performance by the Democrat COngress.
In my book, Bush I and Bush II were no conservatives and men of mediocre ability and talent. And I wonder why you are so eager to have him back in Texas. AS other posters in this forum - some from Texas - have stated - being born in a micro-wave oven doesn’t make you a micro-wave oven and Bush II wasn’t even born in Texas.
He may live in Texas, he may talk with a Texas accent and he may claim he’s a Texan, but in my opinion, he’s just another northeastern liberal RINO like his Daddy - a limousine liberal Yankee.
No, Bush has many more accomplishments than you do— which as far as I understand them are zero.
He successfully defended this ungrateful nation from further terror attacks.
He liberated 50 million people from some of the worst forms of government known in the present time. He removed from power noted mass killer Charles Taylor of Liberia responsible for 250,000 deaths in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Bus enacted massive tax cuts that spurred the nation from the Clinton recession and WTC attacks toward economic growth. he appointed two excellent justices to the court including a new chief justice.
He has conducted himself honorably and not reduced himself to the level of his opponents.
His critics including you never take personal responsibilty.
The payback to Bush from his conservative base in 2006 has been an unmitigated disaster.
It did not bring a Duncan Hunter or conservative reformer to the top of the Presidential ticket. It brought John McCain.
Governor Palin is the same kind of good Republican we need but she is predictably being knifed in the back just like President Bush.
The Democratic congress put in place by Bush reactionaries on the right and left allowed Congress to continue blocks on drilling which Bush was deftly able to defeat alone. The Democratic congress put in by these reactionaries fell to an approval in the single digits and ignited the worst financial crisis in at least 20 years.
In my own mind, I cannot actually think of a person who actually is fighting for the American public except President Bush. I meet lots of people here and in academia who have a perfect idea of how things should be but not one has impressed me as either an advocate themselves or some stand in that matches president Bush in resolve and character.
I could list many more accomplishments that are extraordinary but you do not care. You despise Bush and you will not turn. A man is known by his enemies. Bush is a good man and a great President.
No kidding! And considering he bought the "ranch" just a year or two before running for president, he's no darn cowboy, either. Ever saw him on a horse? He's afraid of them!
“No, Bush has many more accomplishments than you do which as far as I understand them are zero.”
Since you have no idea who I am that is absurd. Besides, I haven’t had the temerity to run for President and claim to be functioning as the same.
“He successfully defended this ungrateful nation from further terror attacks.”
True - but a miracle considering the army of illegals he has allowed to invade our country. There are enouogh of them here to form a large army - all they need is organization and weapons. And you can thank the American public for keeping him from outsourcing our port security to an Arab Country - Dubai.
“He liberated 50 million people from some of the worst forms of government known in the present time. He removed from power noted mass killer Charles Taylor of Liberia responsible for 250,000 deaths in Liberia and Sierra Leone.”
I know about Saddam - American security demanded we intervene and I supported and approved of his actions there. As for Liberia, what does that mean to me and the American citizens who footed the bill? AFrica is a basket case of homicidal, genocidal dictatorships. One more or less is irrelevant except in so far as it impacts America. And I don’t believe Liberia does. He’s supposed to be President of America, not of the world.
“He has conducted himself honorably and not reduced himself to the level of his opponents.”
REALLY??? Talk to Ramos and Compean about that “honorable” part. Maybe you should review his trade dealings with Red China and Mexico.
“Bus enacted massive tax cuts that spurred the nation from the Clinton recession and WTC attacks toward economic growth. “
Agreed.
“he appointed two excellent justices to the court including a new chief justice.”
He appointed ONE conservative Justice - Roberts - and had to be strongarmed by the American Public and his own party into NOT appointing a family hack - Harriet Miers, and INTO appointing Alitto - a good conservative.
“His critics including you never take personal responsibilty.”
????? For what? Buch has and in the past DID have numerous critics on the right. I’m hardly alone.
“The payback to Bush from his conservative base in 2006 has been an unmitigated disaster.”
CORRECTION. The payback FROM Bush to his Conservative base AFTER he didn’t NEED us anymore - post re-election - has been catastrophic.
“It did not bring a Duncan Hunter or conservative reformer to the top of the Presidential ticket. It brought John McCain.”
Don’t blame me. I supported Hunter and contributed to his campaign. Hunter is hardly a cheer-leader for Bush. They differ on trade, the conduct of the war on terror and the solution to dealing with illegal invaders.
“Governor Palin is the same kind of good Republican we need but she is predictably being knifed in the back just like President Bush.”
Guess we agree on Palin, but I don’t think she is being knifed in the back - YET. THAT will come if McNutjob loses the election. And I hardly would connect Bush and Palin. Palin is a genuine conservative and she loves America. Bush is a naive one-worlder who wants to be President of the World, not of the U.S.
“The Democratic congress put in place by Bush reactionaries on the right and left allowed Congress to continue blocks on drilling which Bush was deftly able to defeat alone. “
HUH?????
Bush betrayed his conserevative base - not the other way around - which is why disgusted Republicans stayed away from the polls during the mid-terms. Bush, as bright as a rock - totally ignored it. As for “defeating” the Democrats in Congress on offshore drilling - check again. There was a Presidential order issued by Bush’s Daddy banning offshore drilling. Bush waited until AUGUST before lifting his Daddy’s ban. Well AFTER energy prices skyrocketed.
“I meet lots of people here and in academia who have a perfect idea of how things should be but not one has impressed me as either an advocate themselves or some stand in that matches president Bush in resolve and character.”
Drawing a comparison between Bush and the American Acadmic Community doesn’t hold much water for me. The are a bunch of naive or malevolent lunatics. Saying he is better than they are doesn’t amount ot a hill of beans.
“I could list many more accomplishments that are extraordinary but you do not care. You despise Bush and you will not turn. A man is known by his enemies. Bush is a good man and a great President.”
You sound like a good conservative to me. I am sorry my views on Bush irritate you. But I have had it with politicians - particularly Republican politicians who behave like liberals after we put them in office.
I think Bush and his Presidency will, in the long run, have to answer to history, not to me, for his accomplaishemnts or lack of same. In the final analysis, I think they will judge him to have been not particularly intelligent, well-intentioned, successful in foiling any further attacks on American soil despite his own incompetence, a very poor communicator, and man with extremely flawed ideas about world economy, national economy, and international relations - not to mention a man whose ability to judge his advisors was strongly compromised by personal realtionships.
I hope for our sakes and the sake of America McCain succeeds in defeating Obama. He’s hardly better than Bush and in many respects probably worse - but infinity better than the Islamic socialist running against him. And there is always the hope and prayer that Palin might succeed him.
By the way I agree with all the points in your webpage EXCEPT the last one.
Bush campaigned as a compassionate conservative. He was never a hard core conservative. He never promised to murder all the illegal aliens in the United States— and yes I will grossly misinterpret your views just like you do with President Bush. Please don’t complain about being misinterpreted.
You have no accomplishments because you are not a public figure. You troll around looking for ways to bash Bush. President Bush is a public figure. He is accountable. You have no accountability. It is easier to criticize than lead. President Bush has demonstrated extraordianary leadership.
Even in his early test in office he faced down the Chinese got our pilots and the plane back— prior to 911. Bush pursued the agenda that voters elected him for. Conservatives backstabbed him on Social Security reform.
You may not have noticed but there was a brief insurrection here on Free Republic trying to knife Sarah Palin in the back on immigration just like you and so many others did on immigration reform with Bush. She will be got just like Bush. Everything is amnesty. The term is so completely fluid that every Republican who is not opposed to all legislation can be denounced.
We do live in one world. It is the world of America. We are the empire. The conservatives who want to pull the covers over their heads are utterly foolish. Every person on the earth is oriented toward what America is. Even the anti americans are oriented to their plots against us. Whether Obama or Buchannan, we will not be able to hide from our ultimate take over of the world in the 21st century.
The Pro Saddam, Pro Taliban, Pro Charles Taylor, Pro Abortion, Pro 911 Bush bashers need to take a rest. Do some self assessment. What am i doing to help the nation? Bashing President Bush does not improve the nation nor does it improve the chances for conservatives in future elections.
I cannot see any way President Bush could be more accommodating to all the various Bush haters in this election— including the Republicans. And yet, I see no productive gain from the tactic.
You are wasting your time trying to convince me that President Bush is bad. People who bash Bush are bad but he is not.
“Bush campaigned as a compassionate conservative. “
Asl Ramos and Compean about his “compassion”. Apparently only Scooter Libby is worthy of it.’
“He was never a hard core conservative. “
Really? Where has the “conservative” in compassionate conservative really gone?
“He never promised to murder all the illegal aliens in the United States and yes I will grossly misinterpret your views just like you do with President Bush. Please dont complain about being misinterpreted.”
I really can’t dignify that comment with a response - but one of the PRIMARY duties of ANY government is to protect its borders against invasions. He has failed to do that. He has openly conspirted with the Mexican government against our border laws, our border guards and our national integrity.
“You have no accomplishments because you are not a public figure.”
I made a choice - so did Bush. If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.
“President Bush has demonstrated extraordianary leadership.”
His “leadership” has destroyed the Republican Party, given the Democrats control of COngress and may very well put a socialist Muslim with extreme ego problems in the White House.
“Bush pursued the agenda that voters elected him for.”
Bush did not do this. His failure to do so impacted his popularity.
“You may not have noticed but there was a brief insurrection here on Free Republic trying to knife Sarah Palin in the back on immigration just like you and so many others did on immigration reform with Bush. She will be got just like Bush. Everything is amnesty. The term is so completely fluid that every Republican who is not opposed to all legislation can be denounced.”
I support a form of limited amensty - but not unless our borders are secured and the rogue state of Mexico brought to heal and employers who wax fat on the labor of illegal aliens are put out of business.
“What am i doing to help the nation? “
Actually I’m working for McCain.
“You are wasting your time trying to convince me that President Bush is bad. People who bash Bush are bad but he is not.”
The don’t criticize the leader mentality belongs in NAZI Germany, not in a free Republic. My loyalty is to principles of government, not to any individual human beings.
Rest assured— I can take the heat as can President Bush. But take notice, once I applied some misinterpretation fun to you, your character faltered.
I cannot think of an occasion when President Bush belittled by his unanimously ungrateful nation referred to his opponents as Nazis.
Moreover, I am not worshipping a man. I am defending the policies and actions of President Bush. There is a difference.
But I am the Nazi now and you are the anti-Nazi— good for you.
You also let slip that you are working for McCain. So sadly, you are saddled with advocacy rather than just sitting back and criticizing the imperfections of President Bush. So let’s take a look at Senator McCain— your selected advocacy:
Realize, on Tuesday I will go to the polls and vote for John McCain. I am going to do that because Barack Obama would be a nightmare of public policy. I actually think John McCain will pull it off. With that said, let’s get a few things clear about John McCain:
1. John McCain was defeated in 2000 by . . . George W. Bush. Like Gore and Kerry, George W was a much better option than John McCain. So we took a good look at John McCAin in 2000 and spit him out.
2. John McCain thinks that democrats are good and decent public servants. He thinks conservatives are a necessary evil in public life. His conduct and actions have made that clear. He holds the Christian right in contempt.
3. The primary basis for thinking McCain is potentially decent is Governor Sarah Palin. McCain confronted the ugly reality that he is not trusted by conservatives and conservatives were willing to sit it out in significant margins to such an extent that he had no alternative.
4. John McCain worked to limit our freedom of speech in the McCain Feingold bill.
5. John McCain cooperated with democrats to block conservative judicial appointments.
6. John McCain believes in human induced global warming and seeks limits on economic productivity in order to appease the warming statists.
7. John McCain has on a variety of issues shown a willingness to betray the conservative base in the Congress.
8. With a Democratic Congress, McCain will continue with this practice to an extent that will make President Bush look like welcomed relief.
Saying all of that, I will happily vote for John McCain on Tuesday. I understand politics lesser of evil principals. They make perfect sense. I do not think McCain will be a better President than Bush. I think Palin would probably be better— perhaps.
In proving Bush wrong you must prove Kerry and Gore right— which would again be utter foolishness.
You are just looking for excuses. I admire your courage admitting to limited amnesty. That surprises me.
I couldn’t agree with you more about McCain.
He is the lesser of the two evils, not the perfect candidate. My first choice was Hunter, my second was Romney and I said I would never even vote for McCain if he won. Obama changed all that.
I said McCain would be worse than Bush if he gets elected, especially if he has to deal with an all Rat Congress.
But maybe, just maybe, Palin will take over if McCain can’t carry through to the end of his term or run a second term.
I’m supporting McCain not because I like him, but because Obama ia major menace - a serious threat to Democracy as we understand it. Mark my words. If Obama gets elected he will NEVER leave the White House willingly - even after two terms. EVEN NOW he is advocating a “civilian security force”. This is a code word for an Obamaist State secret police and ministery of truth.
Obama is more than bad for the Country, he is an evil man with a clandestine agenda.
I agree with everything you just said.
