Something in American culture has made them that deluded though. People are driven or conditioned into a state of dementia and hysteria that makes them look for cult leaders and false messiahs. That part needs deeper analysis and explanation. I think it's like in the late 1960s and early 1970s, during the Vietnam era and hippie drug counter-culture when people got involved with New Age mind control cults. Something makes people vulnerable to mind control and authoritarian mass movements. Like in the '20s and '30s in Germany.

We have a natural desire for direction and to be led. That desire is there for us to seek God, but he has been replaced with BHO for a lot of people. I think it is because God has been taken out of everyday life and natural conversation among people so they do not know God is what they desire.

It was that they removed God and replaced it with secular morality, but man still needs a god-head figure. Especially in times of crisis, at this time the church holds no credibility for them, so they turn to one who seems ...charismatic.
