Senator Barack Obama's $4 million-plus bought him a rating of 21.7 Wednesday night (Oct. 29) among the top 56 local TV markets measured by electronic meters, according to Nielsen. The half-hour informercial, aired at 8 p.m. on four networks, CBS, NBC, Univision and Fox, plus MSNBC and NY1. (The Nielsen data does not include BET, which aired the infomercial during different time periods.)
Fox delayed the airing of the final game of the World Series by one-half hour to accommodate Obama's informercial. Only ABC ran its regularly-scheduled program, Pushing Daisies.
An unusual presidential media tactic, Obama's infomercial was the first to be aired by a presidential candidate since Ross Perot's on Election Day in 1996, which was watched by 16.8 percent of households.
Among the top 56 local markets, Baltimore had the largest TV audience with a household rating of 31.3, followed by Philadelphia (29.0) and West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce (28.). The market with the lowest rating was Portland, Ore. with a 14.2 rating.
National ratings for the infomercial will be released by Nielsen Thursday (Oct. 30) afternoon.
Good question. I need help, too.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I’m hoping the ratings were REALLY high on it — because I was pretty repulsed and amused by the cavalcade of victims trotted out.
Not impressive in my book.
It’s pretty good, but I’m glad people watched...it was beyond silly and obnoxious.
Chicago wasn’t one of the Top three?
Now, remind me who was playing in the World Series right after the infomercial? /s
HUGE! - Family Guy is a very popular TV show....5.7 season premiere. He did 4 times that. I don’t think the Superbowl draws much better.
My question — did he get more or fewer people than the Palin-Biden debate?
What does 21.7 mean?
Barack Hussein Obama’s “Great Pumpkin” speech (you “Peanuts” fans should get the reference).
It doesn’t matter how many networks it took — if 30 million people watched it, that’s a huge audience. Rush claims only 20 million in any given WEEK; this was a half hour on one evening.
That was the total across at least 6 networks. Seems to be a little deceiving as no other show is on simultaneously 6 networks.
The total household viewership in the US is 112.8 million. Each point means 1% of that total. A 21 rating means roughly 24 million households saw the infomercial.
Google O’Reilly’s ratings, my observation was with the gas price down, most folks were out burning carbon while still having the freedom to do so
GTFO of here. LOL
This was 21.7 spread over CBS, NBC, FOX, and MSNBC.
The superbowl has like 70 million viewers.
I couldn’t get myself to watch it. To ease my guilt I watched a Chris Rock comedy show. Didn’t really help.
