Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly/Nadeam Elshami 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 10/30/2008 Pelosi Statement on U.S. Economy Shrinking in Third Quarter

Washington, D.C. — Speaker Nancy Pelosi today issued the following statement on third quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) numbers, which shrank at a 0.3 percent annual rate in the July-September, marking the worst showing since the 2001 recession, and weekly applications for unemployment benefits, which remained at 478,000, near an all time high.

“Today’s GDP news and jobless claims report confirm what Americans already know: that our nation’s economy is shrinking; consumers are not spending; and businesses are producing fewer goods. At a time of worsening economic conditions for families and workers, Americans expect leadership that will help Main Street recover.

“The House passed an economic recovery and job creation package in September, but the legislation was blocked by Republicans in the Senate and opposed by the President. With American families suffering, workers losing their jobs and businesses contracting their production, we must work together on a fiscally responsible plan that will boost the economy and restore consumer confidence.

“The New Direction Congress is committed to addressing the economic crisis in the short-term and the long-term, creating good-paying jobs here at home, providing relief to struggling families and small businesses, and making us more competitive in the 21st century global economy.”

No one, no one or anything anywhere, is doing less than Congress for the past two years...except for the so-called TARP program that contained 150 billion dollars in earmarks.

Nice going, Madam Speaker; nice going Mr. Frank.

How is it that these numb tacos are in office?

“we must work together on a fiscally responsible plan that will boost the economy and restore consumer confidence. “

Fiscally responsible? Since when has Congress been concerned about being fiscally responsible?

ROFLMAO

This lady really 1) is an idiot or 2) thinks you’re an idiot.

On display for all to see is the New Direction we were promised 2 years ago. The President does not have any authority to ‘fix the economy’. The Congress legislates and taxes. The POTUS proposes, the Congress disposes.
Are you better off than you were 2 years ago?

Something is wrong with Pelosi. She didn’t put “failed Bush policies” anywhere in her statement.

Boo-hoo. GDP slows down by three-tenths of a percent, and we need an economic dictator to pull us through the crisis. I’d like to hear how desperate they’d be if the economy really was collapsing, if I weren’t so afraid they’d mount a socialist coup.

Why can’t one government, anywhere, ever, try getting through a tiny hiccup by leaving things alone? Here’s a better question: why do we listen to Congress in tough times, as if they don’t have an interest in the matter? Can’t we listen to someone else (say, an economist), then tell THEM what to do?
