A proposal to tax residents who own houses that are larger than 5,000 square feet will be considered today by the Los Angeles City Council's Budget and Finance Committee.
The "luxury tax" was proposed by Councilman Richard Alarcon as a way to increase revenue for the city of Los Angeles. Under the proposal, houses that are between 5,000 and 5,999 square feet would be taxed $1,000. Every additional 1,000 square feet would be taxed another $1,000 up to 10,000 square feet, which would result in a $6,000 fee.
In the city of Los Angeles, there are 6,336 single-family residences that exceed 5,000 square feet and 534 houses larger than 10,000 square feet. Taxing those residences would generate $15 million a year.
The tax would most affect homeowners in Bel Air, Beverly Crest, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Encino, Tarzana, Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Toluca Lake and the Wilshire area.

With Obama as President, he’ll force those with 5000+ sq ft homes to take in people who are less fortunate.
Why is the tax capped at 10,000 feet? Why not soak the rich? Hollywood values again?
But not him, of course.
No Problem with me. I am sure all those rich democrats living in these giant homes will gladly pay the extra tax. After all, it’s for the children.
Well, on one hand I’m outraged, but on the other, this IS LA and those rich folks ARE ultra-liberal, so I hope they DO get screwed. Maybe it will wake them up!
(With this Luxury Tax, affluent residents who own mansions which meet or exceed 5,000 square feet and consume more city services will have a chance to give back to their communities as all).
I love the way they couch it into some “fairness” crap. Upon closer inspection, it always shows up as crap. After all, if the home is “consuming” more electric and water power, the inhabitants are paying for it. If it is “consuming” more cleanup services, it is already paid through higher property taxes related to the worth of the home. On the other hand, those affected will mostly be the libs actors, and soon, Silicon Valley moguls who have been pushing California left for years.
Excellent! Couldn’t happen to a better community - and I’m sure all those folks in the barrio - legal and illegal - will really appreciate the redistribution of wealth thanks to the LA City Council. May they all stew in their own petard!
Folks, whenever the phrase “spread the wealth” is used, always make sure to correct the speaker -
It’s not “the” wealth, it’s “your” wealth and “my” wealth. It doesn’t just exist out there on a tree, it belongs to someone.
This is another way of driving more and more white people out of California, clearing the way for more latinos to move into the better neighborhoods at cut rate.
“Why is the tax capped at 10,000 feet? Why not soak the rich? Hollywood values again?”
The fellow travelers must be protected, sounds more and more like Communist Russia.
John Dingell and the Demorats are working on an energy bill that will do away with mortagage interest deductions for those who live in a 3,000 sq. foot or greater home. No lie.
from each according to ability, to each according to need..... this is what happens when u influx massive poverty...... the ship leans and those falling off grasp to those survivors for help....... thus sinking the ship in its entirety.
They better include tents in this legislation, because Californication is about 6 months away from having them be the dominant form of housing...
Duck and cover, beeotches
I heard a great analogy on the radio yesterday that should be repeated to every child regarding redistribution.
Every child in school who gets an A in class should be required to give up 2 points of that grade to help the children that are failing. That way everyone gets a c no matter how hard they work.
Oft posted, but here ya go:
FATHER/DAUGHTER TALK
A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and was very much in favor of the redistribution of wealth.
She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt hat her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.
One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the addition of more government welfare programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.
Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didnt even have time for a boyfriend, and didnt really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.
Her father listened and then asked, How is your friend Audrey doing? She replied, Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She s so popular on campus, college for her is a blast. Shes always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesnt even show up for classes because shes too hung over.
Her father asked his daughter, Why dont you go to the Deans office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.
The daughter, visibly shocked by her fathers suggestion, angrily fired back, That wouldnt be fair! I have worked really hard for my grades! Ive invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!
The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, Welcome to the Republican
Party.
Got a source on that? Good God if that happens I'd demolish about 30 sq feet of my house.
