Baghdad condemns 'US Syria raid'
BBC News ^ | Tuesday, 28 October 2008

Iraq has denounced a raid into Syria at the weekend, saying it does not want its territory to be used as a launch-pad for US attacks on its neighbours.

Syria urged the UN Security Council to hold the US responsible for the attack, which it says killed eight civilians.

And Syria's cabinet called the attack "barbaric", ordering a US school and cultural centre in Damascus to be shut.

Unnamed US officials have said the operation killed a key figure involved in the smuggling of fighters into Iraq.

But Syrian foreign minister Walid Muallem denied the US claims calling them "totally unjustified".

He branded the attack a "war crime attempt" and said it had claimed the lives of civilians - a father and his three children, a farm guard and his wife, and a fisherman.

An unnamed US official told Reuters news agency the raid killed Iraqi Abu Ghadiyah, a former lieutenant of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaeda in Iraq leader who was killed in 2006.

Well, what did you expect the Iraqis to say?

“We’re happy the infidels inflicted a long overdue butt kicking?”

Relax, its all posturing. The Iraqis pretend to be indignant and the Syrians pretend to believe them.

I'm tired of having to tiptoe around the xenophobic Arabs. If they have nothing nice to say about the way we're protecting their country, then they should just shut the hell up. We're always concerned about what the Arabs will think, Arab sensibilities, etc., how long can we abide this charade where we sacrifice blood and treasure to give these people the liberty with which they condemn us? If they can't see fit to change their rhetoric in light of what has been done for them, then we will never be able to change the opinion of the U.S. on the Arab street.

I agree with you. If they’re just pretending when are they going to “pretend” to be a democracy? One of these days they’re gonna’ have to stand up and be counted. If not then destroy all the oil wells and pipe lines and refineries so Al Queda can’t get them and get the heck out. That wouldn’t be a bad idea to do anyway if O gets elected. He’ll pull out and give the oil to the enemy.

Iraq is ours!! It is bought and paid for. We can launch whatever we feel is necessary from anywhere in Iraq until our debts are paid off.

the “Arab street” understands full well what happened and why Iraq is saying what it is saying

No we are not going to change how arab culture handles unpleasant episodes involving other arabs at the hands of non arabs. This appears to be harmless.

Now, crowds of Iraq arabs beseiging our bases and the govt to protest the insult to Syria- that is serious, Not gonna happen. The guys we whacked were doing hits on Iraqi arabs.

They will say what they have to in order to survive.

But nonetheless, they are on our side. No worries.

We liberated Iraq to overthrow a tyrant and stop his support for terrorism. Iraq does not belong to us- it is a sovereign nation where we are a guest, not an occupier. They do not owe us any debt of money. We are not running a protection racket here.

This is just political posturing, anyway. It's just the way the Middle-East works.

Spot on for an area of the world where the art of the lie is a competitive sport.

"we are not going to change how arab culture handles unpleasant episodes involving other arabs at the hands of non arabs"

I understand the dynamic, and I've choked on it long enough. If its always going to be us versus them, a crude form of religious tribalism, irrespective of notions of liberty, or the sacrifices that have been made to give them democracy - especially in favor of the Saddam-like dictatorship that exists in Syria, then there is no hope. They would rather all be Arab brothers than free men. Our boys shouldn't have to die for these 7th century bastards.

"They do not owe us any debt of money"

We were sold on this invasion by the government stating that the cost of the war would be repaid with oil revenues. When those revenues start flowing and a majority of the debt paid off, I will change my attitude.
