I believe that Obama's inspirational leadership, contemplative nature and well-reasoned, forward-looking policies offer our troubled nation a real opportunity to face and overcome its many challenges at home and abroad.
On an array of domestic issues, including health care, education, tax policy, the environment and alternative energy sources, Obama promises a clean break from the recent past and tangible hope for a return to fiscal responsibility, economic security and true environmental stewardship, all of which are essential to restoring our greatness. Now, Obama must be aware of the hopes that he has raised through his discussion of these issues. Many people will rightly take his words as his commitment and will judge him accordingly.
On the international front, his thoughtful and responsible approach to extricating our troops from Iraq, reallocating our finite resources elsewhere in the war on terrorism, and reviving effective use of our diplomatic corps all warrant our support. To be successful in these endeavors, Obama must be an active student of history. In attempting to bring peace to the Middle East, for example, he should recognize that the United States has played a role in the region since Franklin Roosevelt went to Saudi Arabia to meet with King Abdul-Aziz. Obama must appreciate that he is not writing on an empty page and will need to be sensitive to that which has come before him.

Who is this goof?
The guy’s got several hundred million left in the kitty. That can buy a lot of love.
If the press is this ga-ga over Obama now just think what it will be like if he wins. They have him walking on water now.
Who the hell is this guy? What brand of crack has he been smoking? The better question may be, what has he been promised?
Oh, it’s Mathias, from Maryland.
Look up the word “RINO” in the dictionary and you see his picture.
Mathias was elected to the Senate in 1968, unseating incumbent Democrat Daniel Brewster. He continued his record as a liberal Republican in the Senate, and frequently clashed with the conservative wing of the party. For a few months in late 1975 and early 1976, Mathias considered running an insurgent presidential campaign in an attempt to stave off the increasing influence of conservative Republicans led by Ronald Reagan.
His confrontations with conservatives cost him several leadership positions in the Senate, including chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee. Despite isolation from his conservative colleagues...., etc.
Mac Mathias from Maryland. A really BIG RINO.
Ho hum.

Former Republican? He was NEVER a Republican to begin with!
The last time I saw Mac Mathias was at the 1983 World Series. He must be in the WaPo’s Where-Are-They-Now files.
I didn’t say he was a “former Republican.” I said he was a RINO. :)
He does bear an uncanny resemblance...
All he needs is a long cigarette holder and Janet Reno standing by him and I'm completely fooled.
"Tangible hope"
He sounds like so many other OBama supporters. Hoping and wishing that OBama will be the man of their dreams without any real indication that is likely to happen, i.e. must be a student of history, must be aware, has to do this or that. Bottom line he doesn’t have to do or be any of these things once he is elected. He will be exactly what he is, an unrepentant, redistributive, far left socialist. My wife thinks there are going to be a lot of intelligent people wondering what happened after the Messiah has been in office a couple of month and he has had the opportunity to start enacting all the change he said he was going bring during the campaign. None of which they took at face value when he was saying it.
I think in about 2 years, if Bambi is elected, you will come to learn, based on how few people you will know who will admit to actually voting for OBama, that McCain won in a landslide with 80% of the popular vote.
I believe Charlie needs to be committed.
A socialist.
Hmmmm....another COMMIE sympathizer....where is McCarthy when you need him.....
