Hollywood insiders rip MSNBC, defend Palin

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In a room full of television industry executives, no one seemed inclined to defend MSNBC on Monday for what some were calling its lopsidedly liberal coverage of the presidential election.

The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.

She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.

Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."

Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.

"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.

Bloodworth-Thomason even suggested a defense of Palin and her supporters should be written into TV programing, just as she went out of her way to portray Southern women as smart in her hit TV show "Designing Women."

Attendee Michael Reagan, the radio talk-show host and son of President Ronald Reagan, said he no longer will appear as a guest on MSNBC because "I actually get death threats."

"I'll stop sending them," joked Larry Gelbart, the writer, producer and director best known for the "M*A*S*H" television series and such movie screenplays as "Tootsie" and "Oh, God!"

That article about Olberman has got to be one of the weirdest things I have ever read.

I spend more time on the computer than I do watching TV. I watch FOX, and when I get tired of this politics 24/7 I find a movie to watch.

Wait a minute! Spock must be sporting a beard if Linda Bloodworth-Thomason is looking to go steady with Sean Hannity.

I don't see it as support. It's more of a case of humor and keeping an eye on the enemy.

So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will fight without danger in battles.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

I used to watch Sports Center on ESPN with Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick. At that time I really liked Olbermann. Now I wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire.

Yep. When he was reporting sports, and not politics, his sarcasm and humor were great and entertaining. Now he's just another one of those ultra-lib drive-by types.

It’s the same thing with Zero’s near obsession about Sean Hannity.

It's kinda sad that it's come to this- Clinton supporters are now considered "right wingers".

How scary is it that some people are such left-wingers that clinton supporters can be considered right-wingers?

You eiether have to be really really hip, or really really geeky to appreciate your reference. Maybe I'm both.

Before Maddow went on Air America which was before her MSNBC gig she was a Lesbian activist in San Francisco. Don’t knoiw whether she played the he or she role, but kind of believe it was the he. Haircut and lack of makeup are kind of hints.

Wow! This is rare.

This is why the polls are such crap. They are not taking the pulse of what's really happening in the country. They are just confetti and sparklers, interesting to look at, but of not real substance.

Bloodworth-Thomason is in Clinton's pocket for sure. I can make a guess about some others.

No real surprises, other than they'd say stuff like this in a public forum.

Hollywood people who, in spite of their political differences, treat each other with respect and are even willing to point the finger at one of their own when they are wrong. What’s wrong with this picture? Nothing! Good article!

Diminished? First you'd have to have attained some position to be diminished from, deary.

Perhaps someone else should have made that argument, since many of us still remember that lovely photo of you jumping up and down on the bed in the Lincoln bedroom.
