LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In a room full of television industry executives, no one seemed inclined to defend MSNBC on Monday for what some were calling its lopsidedly liberal coverage of the presidential election.
The cable news channel is "completely out of control," said writer-producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat.
She added that she would prefer a lunch date with right-leaning Fox News star Sean Hannity over left-leaning MSNBC star Keith Olbermann.
Olbermann was criticized by many who attended Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event was dubbed "Hollywood, America and Election '08."
Bloodworth-Thomason and others seemed especially critical of the way MSNBC -- and other media -- has attacked Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin while demeaning her supporters.
"We should stop the demonizing," she said, adding that Democrats have been worse than Republicans as far as personal attacks on candidates are concerned. "It diminishes us," she said of her fellow Democrats.
Bloodworth-Thomason even suggested a defense of Palin and her supporters should be written into TV programing, just as she went out of her way to portray Southern women as smart in her hit TV show "Designing Women."
Attendee Michael Reagan, the radio talk-show host and son of President Ronald Reagan, said he no longer will appear as a guest on MSNBC because "I actually get death threats."
"I'll stop sending them," joked Larry Gelbart, the writer, producer and director best known for the "M*A*S*H" television series and such movie screenplays as "Tootsie" and "Oh, God!"

Why do you watch Olberman? I feel compelled to ask because I wouldn’t waste 10 seconds on the guy.
I doubt they have ever heard of Robespierre.
TV viewership is down, movies are not selling as well. With the current economic crunch, people are being even more picky about how they spend their entertainment dollars.
I will say that Bloodworth-Thomason's comments are about a month late.
We’ll have to bronze this and mount it!
Now where’s that “hell freezes over” pic? LOL
Please.
This is so predictable. Trash-talk the conservatives for years, 24 hours a day and then before the election plead mea culpa so they can say next week, “See, we are SO balanced.”
Give it up. The game you play is so over.
Old media is so over.
Just one question. If you are so in the tank, all of you mediashills, for Obambi now, what happens when he flubs up.
No comments? Scared you’ll be called ‘racist!,’ have to back his policies?
You know you all have crossed that boundary from fawning sycopants into propaganda don’t you? You’ve become the propaganda arm for the next administration which means you have zero credibility.
You should watch it sometime. I look at it as another comedy channel. It’s pretty humorous to hear their spin and blather. Especially when Chris Matthews gets excited and starts spitting on the guests.
*snicker*
I think the stars believe they’ll be co-rulers, but the executives who are the brains of the entertainment industry know otherwise and have a lot more to lose.
sycopants = Sycophants.
lost the h in translation.
I used to watch Sports Center on ESPN with Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick. At that time I really liked Olbermann. Now I wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire.
Until liberals are always identified with the label “left wing” as we are always described as right wingers, this was nothing more than a night of self congratulatory mutual masturbation coupled with a don’t kick the dog night.
“Old media is so over.”

True enough for about half the US population.
The other half continues to either remain ignorant, or worship at the LeftMedia/Hollywood altar of non-judgmentalism, “diversity”, “tolerance”, “inclusiveness” and openly practiced “reverse” racism.
I don't see these people as worthy of my support.
IMHO, I sense that even what I call the “more reasonable” liberals are getting scared that the hardcore radical lefties and their supporters are going to ruined it for them because they see that Obama cannot close the deal.
This al Reuters story is just window dressing for after the coronation of Obama. It will give cover to Hollywood liberals to say, “We defended Palin”. But in reality it is just cheap talk. Let’s see where LBT’s political donations and vote really went. Obama of course.
“intellectually honest libs.”
One would like to give them the benefit of the doubt—but, I think they’re out for themselves and just trying to get free attention. Must suck for them being out of the limelight so long...
If I recall correctly, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and her husband were Bill Clinton’s media czars. It is quite a shock to hear her comments condemning the media cruelties to Governor Palin; I admire her for standing up.
I've never understood why so many Freepers like M*A*S*H. In that TV series, the Americans were the bad guys and the Red Chinese and North Koreans were the good guys. BTW, the Hawkeye and BJ characters did several things that would have been treason, including helping a North Korean get false papers so he could work at the MASH unit. In that episode, if Colonel Potter had REALLY been the "old war horse" he was supposed to be, he would have had them both brought up on charges that included jail time.
In another episode, Hawkeye taught a pilot who bombed the North Koreans that he was evil. This was the template used in the aborted attack on John McCain by the left. I think they were surprised that there was a backlash to this attack.
The acting was good, and the stories well written, but it was a profoundly anti-American show.
They may not read Rand or Hayeck, but Hollywood types can read a balance sheet. Even a Clintonista like Bloodworth-Thomason recognizes that America-bashing movies don’t make a profit—Stone’s W is only the lastest in a lengthy series of Anti-Bush flics that turned out to be box office stinkers—and television shows that demonize half of the electorate don’t get enough market share to draw advertisers. It’s just business, and Olbermann is worse than a fool. He’s a money-loser.
