Two people were arrested Monday afternoon after an altercation led to five Republican campaign workers being sprayed with Mace at their headquarters in Galax.
Galax Police Chief Rick Clark said officers were dispatched shortly before 1 p.m. to the Galax Republican headquarters on East Grayson Street when a caller reported someone had sprayed office workers with Mace.
Responding officers arrested Daniel Cason Meinecke, 29, and Cara Annis Hindman, 26, both of Galax.
Meinecke was charged with one count of misdemeanor assault, Hindman was charged with five counts of misdemeanor assault.
Galax Republican Chairman Mike Stevens said he was one of the volunteers sprayed. He said a man and woman came into the office and asked for campaign yard signs for the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
After being told the Obama-Biden campaign office was up the street, Stevens said, the man said he was aware of that, but that he thought Democratic signs were being stolen and “stashed” at the Republican office.
Stevens told him that nobody there had stolen signs, not were they “stashing” any in the building.
A confrontation escalated and, Stevens said, the man began to use some four-letter words.
Stevens said there were older women in the office and he asked the couple to leave the building.

The writer and editor sure did a good job concealing that it was a Democrat criminal assault on Republican campaign workers.
I think we all will have a rude awakening next week. I was sitting at my favorite Sonny’s restaurant in a booth. In the booth behind me were 3 gentlemen(thugs) and they were talking about how if their man obama loses, it’s all out war in the streets. I don’t know if this will happen, but I think it’s been coming for a long time. I wonder if voters are worried about such a possibility and they are voting obama because of fear of riots and violence. The people that I talked to seem to shy away from the question.
I hope it doesn't come to that, but I like our chances.
And if it does come to that, it will be the media's fault. They refused to do their job in vetting a Presidential candidate, and they promoted riduculously false assumptions about his likelihood of winning.
If he does lose, look for riots in several US cities, chaos in Kenya and the UN, the Euros and the Arabs in mourning, along with numerous worldwide editorials on the stupid Americans who squandered their last chance to be citizens of the world.
Look for the Palestinians to rev up the intifada, for al Qaeda to release a new dismal weekend at Binnie's video, and for global condemnation of America. Look for OPEC to give ominous warnings, look for China to disapprove, look for the MSM to cry and scream foul and accuse the Republicans of cheating and voter suppression.
Look for the stock market to go up sharply and for businesses to breath a sigh of relief. Look for ACORN to cry foul and then disappear. Look for Reid and Pelosi and Chavez and Castro to be in a foul drinking mood.
Look for a newly empowered and emboldened Democratic Congress to vow revenge and obstructionism. Look for thousands of stoned MTV voters to say, "Dude, what happened? I was playing WOW and like, the old dude won."
But unfortunately, I fear that we will soon be facing President Obama. I hope I'm wrong.

For the crimes of fraud and treason, the democrats deserve it.
