Two people were arrested Monday afternoon after an altercation led to five Republican campaign workers being sprayed with Mace at their headquarters in Galax.
Galax Police Chief Rick Clark said officers were dispatched shortly before 1 p.m. to the Galax Republican headquarters on East Grayson Street when a caller reported someone had sprayed office workers with Mace.
Responding officers arrested Daniel Cason Meinecke, 29, and Cara Annis Hindman, 26, both of Galax.
Meinecke was charged with one count of misdemeanor assault, Hindman was charged with five counts of misdemeanor assault.
Galax Republican Chairman Mike Stevens said he was one of the volunteers sprayed. He said a man and woman came into the office and asked for campaign yard signs for the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
After being told the Obama-Biden campaign office was up the street, Stevens said, the man said he was aware of that, but that he thought Democratic signs were being stolen and stashed at the Republican office.
Stevens told him that nobody there had stolen signs, not were they stashing any in the building.
A confrontation escalated and, Stevens said, the man began to use some four-letter words.
Stevens said there were older women in the office and he asked the couple to leave the building.

I am still unable to get my head around the pure hatred and mental paralysis of Obama supporters.
These clueless, hate-filled punks are in for a very rude awakening next Tuesday evening.
It’s ironic that the left frequently refer to conservatives, Republicans and Freepers as Nazis or brownshirts or fascists, but when we see actual brownshirt activity, it is invariably done by the haters on the left.
I hope they resisted arrest and that some police brutality was necessary.
These brownshirts never attack men. They always go after women, children and seniors. The campaign offices need able men standing guard and ready to go to war on these leftists when they attack.
Be easy on them. They’re just following their leaders orders to “get in peoples faces”
I really believe in “right to carry”.. There would not have been anything to report except to call the cops and have them send an ambulance. When 911 ask “ why the ambulance”, he could say “ someone lost his gonads in the office”
The louder they scream and point fingers at us the guiltier they are of said action.
[I’m still trying to get it pithy....]
No need to involve the judicial system IMO ... just take these flakes out back and provide a little well deserved and long overdue street justice.
Of course, our side is devious too. We dare to ask a simple tax question of Obama, and dare to ask questions of Biden. Dispicable.
We have similar aggressive thugs out here in California. People supporting the Prop. 8 Amendment against Gay Marriage are being harassed. A friend of mine had a family member followed and harassed when she was distributing sign this weekend.
I wonder what will happen to me when I put up my "No Poo-Poo on the Pee-Pee; Vote Yes on 8" sign this weekend. I'm kind of scared but I am willing to take one for the team.
Even money bet that there are stolen McCain/Palin signs in the back of the Dem HQ. We all know how the Dems like to project their sins onto the Republicans.
They are dangerous, and they will be prone to violence if their black racist loses on Tuesday.

Police prepare for unrest on Election Day...
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/police-prepare-for-unrest-2008-10-21.html
Panic, panic and panic. These frustrated scum are just striking out. Virginia will support McCain and they know it. What these people did was not even intended to intimidate. It was just a temper tantrum. There will be more violence as the week goes on and the pollsters can no longer maintain their campaign of deception.
At some point even they will have to report reality in order to come out of this election with some modicum of credibility.
I think that is in Saul Alinsky’s playbook.
The first sentence makes is seem like the police maced the GOP workers. On purpose or just stupidity?
This is Virginia?! These two dirty hippies must have moved there from California.
