Barack Obama, John McCain locked in a virtual tie in Missouri
The St. Louis Post Dispatcher ^ | October 26, 2008 | Jo Mannies

When it comes to the nation's troubled economy, Missouri's likely voters put greater trust in Democrat Barack Obama than Republican John McCain.

That, in a nutshell, appears to be why Obama's standing in this battleground state has improved since last summer — and why, less than two weeks before the Nov. 4 election, Obama is locked in a too-close-to-call presidential contest with McCain, a new poll shows.

"The economy is driving the presidential race, no question about it,'' said Del Ali, head of Research 2000, which conducted the polls in Missouri and Illinois for the Post-Dispatch and KMOV-TV (Channel 4).

Among the 800 likely Missouri voters polled last week, 48 percent backed Obama, while 47 percent favored McCain. Three percent preferred one of three minor-party candidates, and 2 percent were undecided.

I am learning a lot of Geography and Statistics in this election (it’s fun!)

Okay Fact Time:
Bush Votes: 1,455,713
Kerry Votes: 1,259,171

Winning Margin: 196,542 votes - And this was with Kerry winning a 96,000 (stl city), and a 54,000 margin in stl county and Jackson county each for a KC/STL swing of 204,000 and yet he still lost the state by 196,000 votes?

Obama needs to double the margins from KC/STL, or at least increase it by 50% and run better than Kerry did in Boone county to offset the rest of MO, but even then it looks pretty slim. It’s hard to imagine McCain would do worse than the 19% Bush got in STL city. This state is +2.5 McCain and I see no where Obama can make that up. Other than he’d have to run large margins (like 60-40) in the counties that split 50-50 in 2004. I don’t see that happening.

I love math.

Welcome to Free Republic.
We are a republic, not a democracy.

I suggest you read the Constitution.

“Obama, McCain in virtual Tie...”
Translation: Since they are oversampling democrats, McCain is in the lead..and they cannot admit that.

To set the record straight . . . we are a ‘[Representative Republic” . . . based on the “Constitution of the United States of America.”

thanks for the ping

In my personal, very un-scientific survey, I drove approx. 45 miles on a rural highway in NW Missouri. I counted 18 Mc/Palin signs and only 3 for 'that one'. I like those odds.

You have been spotted as a possible troll. You should lay low for a few days before making any more replies, as per instruction from DU ( I recommend some time after Nov 4th.)

I’m starting to like doing analysis.

PA - Has plenty of room for McCain to make inroads.

Bush - 2,793,847
Kerry - 2,938,095

Western PA - I didn’t realize until I looked at the map that most of these were 50/50 counties. This is where Murtha could really help us: (Mercer, Lawrence, Beaver, Washington, Greene). Keep the margins down in Allegheny and Fayette.

The Philly suburbs are key. Last time Bush was able to use an 11,000 vote margin in Chester county to offset an 11,000 vote loss in Bucks. The 40,000 vote losses in Montgomery and Delaware counties were offset by equal margins in Lancaster and York counties. If these places can cancel out again and Mac can keep the margin in Philly low, he has a shot.

The polls showing Nobama +13 indicate he’s winning Lehigh, Berks, Bucks, and Chester with 55% and Delaware with closer to 62%. If those numbers hold, it would difficult to flip the state.

Today Mason-Dixon has us up 1 in Missouri (McCain 46 Obama 45) and their reputation is second to none.

We'll have to hang in there. I don't see the media calling any states for McCain until they have to, late at night.

The average American is an idiot, and I have no joy in saying that. That Americans on average seem to believe that Democrats — the very SOBs who created the financial crisis in the first place — are better for the economy than Republicans is just mind boggling.

Thanks for the ping, Joe. The energy level in SW MO is high and our HQ is busy all day with people coming in for yard signs, bumper stickers, etc.. We are getting lots of volunteers and the atmosphere is much more positive than 2006 which was a disaster.

If you live in Missouri, print signs from your computer, “Obama is a Socialist” or “Socialism isn’t Change” and glue them to lampposts at busy intersections.

Thousands of people will see them everyday.

Unfortunately, Republicans are seen as a failure. Democrat treachery, media bias, and Republican blunders all came together to create that perception.
