Our Country Deserves Better PAC, a conservative third-party group that released one of the more controversial ads against Barack Obama this cycle, is focusing its fire on Michigan, a state that Pollster.com places safely in the blue column less than two weeks out from Election Day.
PAC coordinator Joe Wierzbicki explained that the John McCain camp's decision to pull resources from the Wolverine State made it that much more important for his group to pour its resources in. "We think the people of Michigan will appreciate that their votes and their issues are going to be discussed and debated and fought for," he said, noting that the Obama campaign has also drawn down some of its resources in the state.
Wierzbicki said he was pleased with the results of the group's campaign in Nevada, where he credits its advertising and "Stop Obama" rallies with tightening the race (though Pollster.com shows Obama moving slightly ahead of McCain in October). The group is spending $500,000 in Michigan to run its previous ad featuring Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers, as well as several new ones.
In "Obama's Patriotism Problem" (subscription), Our Country Deserves Better Chairman Howard Kaloogian speaks to viewers, using several anecdotes to call the Illinois senator's love of country into question. Evoking Ronald Reagan's vision of America as a "shining city on a hill," Kaloogian charges: "When it comes to this presidential campaign, it's clear that Barack Obama is no Ronald Reagan." The spot criticizes Wright's sermons, Obama's refusal to wear an American flag pin, and his campaign's decision to replace the American flag on its airplane with a campaign logo. "If America is not good enough for Barack Obama," Kaloogian says, "then surely Barack Obama is not good enough for America."
Two other ads link Obama to Michigan Democrats, Gov. Jennifer Granholm and "disgraced" former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. "Obama/Granholm: Wrong For Michigan" assails Granholm, whose approval rating is in the 20s, and says that an Obama presidency would mean more of the "same tax-raising, big-government-spending, liberal policies." Meanwhile, this spot reminds viewers of Obama's "political alliance" with Kilpatrick, who resigned in September as part of a plea bargain as he faced perjury and other criminal charges.
The group is also running an ad (subscription) praising Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin as "dedicated to serving America and its citizens." It shows the governor discussing her tenure in Alaska: "As governor, I stood up to the old politics as usual, to the special interests, to the lobbyists, the big oil companies and the good ol boy network." The announcer portrays her as a Washington outsider and a fighter who is "not about to be intimidated by the liberal media."
Wierzbicki said that Our Country Deserves Better is considering expanding its advertising into Wisconsin, another state that looks to be leaning Obama's way.
I second that! I am on their email list and their ads have been very good.
Oh my such great campaign advice. A saturation on Rev. Wright might not get people to vote McCain but it could suppress the Obama vote.
Bump!
America deserves to know that Barack attended a racist church for 20 years. And since McCain and the Republicans are too chickensh6t to do it these guys did.
..I would love to seem some really good polling from Macomb County right about now. It has always been a good indicator how Michigan is going to go—a lot of Reagan Democrats.
Joe Scarbrough is one of the biggest sell-outs ever.
Has gentleman john apologized for this ad yet
I wondered when the good old wrong Rev Wright shouting his hate and vitriol would be brought back for an encore.
Folks in the GOP in the westside of the state are still spitting mad at McCain FOR ANNOUNCING a pullout...you can pullout without surrendering...doesn’t he get that?
People out here who’d have entertained voting for McCain, if McCain said he had a chance, are now voting Libertarian and Constitution Party.
Dumb.
YES! We were saving him for the final stretch! Yeah baby!
great ad!!
Link? I see only one with Wright, Kilpatrick and Ayers. Is that the one?
Good to see that somebody besides Sarah Palin actually wants to see McCain win this election.

German TV to Cover "Save Michigan" Effort as McCain/Palin Supporters Rally in Michigan Cities
* Rallies on Monday in Saginaw, Grand Blanc & Battle Creek
*Rally on Tuesday in Hillsdale
[MICHIGAN] -- The German television network, ARD, one of the world's largest broadcasting companies has confirmed their intention to come up to Grand Blanc, Michigan to cover the pro-McCain/Palin rally being organized by the Our Country Deserves Better committee
www.OurCountryDeservesBetter.com
The decision by ARD TV to cover the event comes on the heels of a major effort by the Our Country Deserves Better committee to rally support for the McCain/Palin campaign in Michigan with a $500,000 television advertising campaign and what will now be 14 rallies in support of McCain/Palin across the state of Michigan.
"The Stop Obama Tour" traversed the Upper and Lower Peninsula of Michigan from October 23-25 and was in Ohio at the house of "Joe the Plumber" (Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher) when the positive polling news was received.
As a result, the Our Country Deserves Better Committee (website: www.OurCountryDeservesBetter.com ) has canceled planned events in Ohio and Pennsylvania to add Monday rallies in Saginaw, Grand Blanc & Battle Creek and a Tuesday morning rally in Hillsdale.
"We are so excited to see the reversal in the poll numbers for John McCain and Sarah Palin in Michigan," said Deborah Johns, a Marine Mom who is a spokesperson for the Our Country Deserves Better Committee.
"We're still a bit behind and we have a lot of work to do, but we are feeling very optimistic about the momentum that has started to build," Johns said.
The Our Country Deserves Better Committee will also continue running its television advertising campaign against Barack Obama and in support of the McCain/Palin ticket.
"Our message to the people of Michigan is that we won't give up the fight to have John McCain win this state, so long as you don't give up fighting either," Johns said.
