Folks...I was out at mall today, outside DC. I couldn't believe it. It was packed. It looked like a week of Christmas crowd. The stores that caters to teens, tweens and 20-something were the most busy...I waited in line for 20 minutes to pay for my duaghter's purchases.
Lots of people, lots of shopping bags...if the economy is bad...it has me fooled.
My point....GO SHOP!!!
The Bush Doctrine!!
Last night I was in downtown Palo Alto. The Apple store was full, and as of 2 weeks ago they were still running out of iPhone 3Gs. People were waiting in a huge line at some sort of expensive new organic ice cream parlor.
Soup lines this ain’t.
When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping.
I usually go to the mall maybe twice a year and this afternoon went thinking it would be quiet, but it was packed here in MO, too! Great sales, especially on shoes.
Unless you have a daughter in College...then you shop all the time!! She’s a nightmare!
same here. went to two malls. packed long lines people buying.
I’d rather invest.
It’s said that the DC area economy is in much better shape than most other local economies nationally because so many of the workers are in safe government jobs, or work for federal contractors.
I will say that real estate sales in the DC area are now back to the 2006 level, which was not so bad, though not as crazy as 2005. It appears that some new construction continues to be sold. However, I find that going to Home Depot takes very little time because the store simply isn’t crowded and the lines are short.
When I go to the shops for my hobby—horseback riding—they are entirely empty even on a Saturday afternoon. Most people who ride horses are fairly well-heeled, but they’re cutting back dramatically. The stable where I board my horse has had many boarders leave because they cannot afford the costs of horse ownership anymore. Fewer people come to horse shows anymore. People are giving horses away or turning them loose because they can no longer afford to feed them and certainly cannot sell them. It’s very sad.
I have observed zero impact as far as incidental experiences in malls and other stores.
Same as it ever was insofar as I can tell.
We’ll see the “bad economy” kick in on “Black Friday.” All of the lowlifes who complained that they didn’t want to have to stand in line to vote will be standing outside the Walmarts and Targets, in the snow, six hours before they are scheduled to open. Let the trampling and fighting begin!
A full year of DNC driven negative spin on the economy has taken it’s toll. People have been told daily that we’re in the worst economy since the big one. Confidence has been eroded completely by all this negative crap designed to influence the election.
Yea the economy is bad.
Wait till the day after Thanksgiving when you turn on the news in the morning and they have a reporter outside you local Best Buy or Target interviewing the people standing in line to get in. They will be asked what they are buying and the usual hot ticket items will be listed.
It all goes back to the herd mentality. You ask people how they themselves are doing, and they will say in most cases, pretty good. But they ask how the country is doing and oh no, everything is going down the tubes.
Tell me about it “the new great depression”, yeah ok sure. The poor kids these days with their cel phones and video games, Mac laptops...will the suffering never end?
I don't know if you're A Christian, but my mom made a good point re the scripture about "speaking life and death" and the power of the tongue. She said we need to start speaking positively over our economy and start speaking words of recovery over it. The media is talking us into a deep(er) recession. Well, I say counter them with words of recovery and prosperity...(DISCLAIMER: and no, I am not speaking about the "prosperity gospel, or the name it and claim it stuff, but rather words of healing and hope and faith...if that makes sense).
Malls were packed here as well. It was even on the news.
No bad economy on this end.
I’ve been working 60+ hours a week since February. Business is good. All of my friends and family are still employed as well.
I understand that Disneyland has been packed this October.
And Disneyland is amazingly expensive these days. It’s going to cost me $1700 for me and my 4 kids and husband to go next month (4 days).
I think this “recession” is overblown. I suppose it will happen eventually (2 consec quarters of declining growth—but have we even had one quarter yet?). Next year I guess.
In Texas here. My local mall was completely packed. Like insanely so. All the red state economies are doing fine. Its the blue states that suffer the most due to their bad policies.
