No Charges In Bingo Shooting

No charges will likely be filed against the manager of a Pensacola bingo hall who took the law into his own hands.

Escambia County Sheriff's deputies say Chad England shot and killed an armed robber who stormed into Beachside Bingo on Jackson Street in Pensacola.

Investigators say Alton Prewitt, 20, entered the bingo hall around 10pm Wednesday. According to witnesses, Prewitt demanded money and fired at least one shot in the ceiling before England grabbed his own gun and fired back.

Prewitt was pronounced dead on the scene. No one else in the bingo hall was hurt.

"It looks like a clear case of self defense," says Glenn Austin, spokesperson for the Escambia County Sheriff's Office. Austin says he believes England was within his rights to shoot the suspect. "He was defending himself and everyone else in the parlor," he says.

Florida has a law that allows residents to protect themselves when they are attacked. The state's "Stand Your Ground Law" makes it legal to use deadly force against an intruder.

I really dislike it when reporters inject opinion into news stories. The manager did not "take the law into his own hands". He acted within the law. It is not as if defense of self, others and property is a new concept. It is as old as mankind, and has been respected in all nearly all law. It certainly has been a part of the American tradition of law for centuries.

I totally agree with you--most of today's reporting is really terrible!

OTOH, let's give the manager here his due: One shot, one kill, no innocents hurt. Way to go!!!!!

Not so in England,
Lately there has been a lot of incidents where a homeowner attacks a robber or intruder and gets fined for unnecessary force or some such b.s.

Agreed. Stupid reporter needs to know that shooting an ARMED ROBBER is not “taking the law into his own hands”.

Well he must get as much sensationalism out of it as possible.
Wait for the ‘other shoe to drop’ and will probably find the Bingo Hall has a ‘no employees with weapons’ policy and the poor guy will probably be looking for work...You know, like the 7/11 people....

The intent of the reporter is to criminalize the robbery victims equally with the robber;anybody not a government drone should not use any weapon.

Freedom just scares some people.

Bingo!

Would anyone be interested in starting a fund to send a box of ammo to anyone who puts down a scumbag. Great publicity opportunity.
