5 Reasons Why McCain/Palin Can Still Win Michigan (Vanity)
October 24, 2008 | no dems

Even though the McCain Campaign has pulled out of Michigan, I think they can still win the State on November 4. Here are 5 Resons why I believe MI can be in the GOP column on Election Night:

#1. 80% of Michigan's black population lives in the City of Detroit. The rest of the State is predominantly White folks who have loathed every Black Mayor Detroit has had going back to the days of Coleman Young. Detroit and the suburbs have a long history of racial tension. How many of you are old enough to remember Detroit burning in 1967?

#2. There are many Southern folks who live in Michigan. They came up from the South to work in the auto factories. They will definitely insure that the Bradley Effect of 6%(+) will kick in on Election Day.

#3. The people of Michigan are outraged that their Democratic Governor, Jenny "I wanna be Marilyn Monroe" Granholm, was reelected in '06 when the State was in economic turmoil at the time. Since then, Michigan has the dubious honor of having the second worst economy in the nation, and they blame Jenny, not the Bush White House and they want to "punish" the Democrats.

#4. In northern MI and in the upper peninsula, there are a gazillion hunters and outdoorsmen who, like Pennsylvanians, cling to their God and guns and they do not like B. Hussein.

#5. There is a very strong Evangelical and Catholic presence in Michigan. The Evangelicals who stayed home in '04 (when Kerry just barely defeated Bush in the State) and '06 will not stay home this year.

Well, that's it. Every Presidential Election year, Michigan get closer and closer to being a Red State. This year, even though McCain has pulled out of the State, I think "I'm seeing Red".

You're crazy. Detroit has enough votes to swing the state. McCalin-Palin have written it off.

One of by best friends is “WAS” the McCain co chair for Michigan .......he is unemployed right now. He said we have a snowballs chance in hell.

We have been blown away by Jenny.

I just hope McCain wins the presidency. I really dont want him to win.....but I really really really really dont want Hussein to win.

Detroit probably has a warehouse full of stuffed ballot boxes ready to be accessed if need be for Obama.

Yep. No one I know is very enthusiastic about either candidate. That's why for lack of a better term, this is a crapshoot election.

Not sure how this contributes to a McCain win, however. If the demographics are the same as they were in previous election years, then I'd expect about the same election results.

#2. There are many Southern folks who live in Michigan. They came up from the South to work in the auto factories. They will definitely insure that the Bradley Effect of 6%(+) will kick in on Election Day.

Not so sure about this. The Bradley Effect, to the extent that it exists, is more of a northern Democrat thing. Southern whites live with the "you're a racist" nonsense every day, and I would imagine are inured to it by now. Northern white Democrats, on the other hand, are not and are more susceptible to fears that somebody else in the party may think they are racist for not voting for 0bama.

Archer was a good mayor and everybody, white, Black and Purple knew it.

UAW members get the day off to vote. AFL-CIO is spending huge money and energy on GOTV. If only Detroit weren’t part of the state, it would indeed be a red state.

How can the auto workers not realize that high oil prices put them out of work? I would not be surprised to see MI turn.

If Palin swung through the state next weekend, would that have any chance of changing things? I really think she is going to hit the MI, MN, WI swing one time before the election.

People in MI used to vote for Republican liberals like George Romney and William Millikin, and then they swung to the Democrat liberals and are not about to switch. They also believe in Oprah and Oprah’s Obama. It is true though that maybe 35 percent of the state is really conservative, but they always get outvoted and outmanned.

Agreed. If it wasn't for Detroit, McCain would take MI as easily as IN.

All auto workers know to do is what the union bosses tell them.

I really don’t think you are crazy.

I think the bad economy combined with public backlash over media abuse of republican ticket can bring MIchigan in.

Scandals in Detroit did not help dems there either.

I really wonder if Obama is going to be able to do fraud as well all over the country.

There was no dem primary in Michigan so things are more messy there than most states. Obama often had inflated polls in the primaries. This could be a nother example of this.

The same can be said for every state that contains large cities...which tells you what on side of freedom our city-dwellers stand.

I make no bones about my contempt for the city-dwellers in this country. A pox on all of them.

Latest polling shows 17 points down which is a high hill to climb.

Michigan was Red in 1988 and 1992 when Reagan beat Mondale in a landslide and Bush beat Dukakis in a blowout.

McCain would have to win the National Popular vote by 5% or greater to carry Michigan.

If that happens we will be a happy bunch on Nov 4th.

" #5. There is a very strong Evangelical and Catholic presence in Michigan. The Evangelicals who stayed home in '04 (when Kerry just barely defeated Bush in the State) and '06 will not stay home this year. "

# 5 should be the strongest reason, as long as we don't have those who are " Sitting this one out " or " Teach the Republicans " or " 3rd Party " ... we don't have the luxury this time to vote 3rd party... or to sit this one out. a non vote for McCain/Palin is a vote for Obama.

Um we had Engler for 12 years and he was no liberal.
