I do a good bit of traveling in my line of work, and have taken care to notice political signs in peoples' yards.
In the last month, I've been to Iowa, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Missouri. (I live in NC)
Now, I know that this is only my impression, but I can't get over the number of McCain signs I've seen, as opposed to the (lack of) Obama signs. With the exception of a very small part of West Virginia/Iowa, I haven't seen a significant number of Obama signs anywhere. Where are all these supporters?
Oklahoma/Virginia didn't surprise me, but Missouri? I thought I'd read that Obama was ahead in Missouri, and I bet the number of McCain to Obama signs ratio at least 5 to 1. Even in the case of the person supporting the Democrat Gubernatorial candidate, the house didn't have an Obama sign.
Seems strange to me. Any thoughts?
subconssiously, people see what they want to see. If you doubt this, think of the last time you bought a car. Didn’t you see more of them on the road?
I saw a bumper sticker that said: Vote Obama, Obama/Bider.
(No I did not misspell Bider.)
I'm sure that is illegal or racist somehow.
We have significantly more McCain/ Palin signs in my neighborhood, which would be expected, because I live near a lot of normal people.
</cheery :>
Just to let ya’ll know — drivin down the road today in Wichita, saw the FIRST EVER bumper sticker for Obama.
It’s my understanding that until about 2-3 weeks ago if you wanted an Obama sign in Northern Virginia you had to buy it. Now Obama signs are popping up everywhere, BUT nowhere near as many as Kerry signs in 2004.
I think a lot of people aren’t placing yard signs and bumper stickers for fear of harassment.
On DU etc., there are bad stories about what’s happening to O signs.
Here on FR there are contrary stories about people with McCain bumper stickers and signs. The country is very polarized.
For the first time in forever, I have no bumper sticker. I live in San Francisco now and am almost certain my car would get trashed. That, and/or I’d get hassled on the road while driving. I know, I know, I’m a chicken.
Why do wealthy people want to vote for Obama? It baffles me, it’s like sh*tting in your own bathwater.
Watch Atlanta with those stickers, (GRRR.) Florida interstates are a very nice ride. Panhandle to the coast is cool. You start heading south and you end up with mostly foreigners.
In fact I was in Malibu today taking my son surfing and saw TWO cars with McCain/Palin stickers in the parking lot and no Surfers for Obama stickers at all!
It takes a little to make me happy, but I loved it!!
I understand what you are saying, but wouldn’t you think that a person who was supporting the Democrat candidates for lesser office would also support the Big O?
Yet, his sign was often conspicuously absent, in more than just a couple of instances. Strange.
In my area of south central NH there is a paucity of Obama signs. However, in our lily white picture perfect town center Obama signs are everywhere. Really sickening. A lot of these people are well to do with old money.
I live in Illinois, Democrat area (there aren’t many Repub areas left here!) There are usually yard signs everywhere—I’ve seen one Obama sign. Either there isn’t alot of support or no one wants to show it which tells me it isn’t very strong. I drove thru Illinois and Missouri this week. Saw several Obama signs around St. Louis. Southwest Missouri—what a great place!—McCain/Palin signs everywhere. And lots of Nobama bumper stickers. Interesting observation—I was at a rest stop just west of St. Louis last Saturday after the BO rally had ended. Five cars of Obama supporters (bumper stickers on the cars) pulled into the rest stop. A motley group got out of the cars and engaged in loud conversation laced with lots of profanity. The license plates were all from out of state. I guess they drove to St. Louis for the rally? Does BO have roving bands of supporters who travel to his events?
(I live in Howard County)
Maybe they were blown away by a righteous wind?
I’ve seen 2 yard signs and 2 or 3 bumper stickers on typical liberal cars. Lots of McCain support here. I did see a McCain sticker on a Prius.
There are NO McCain signs 'round here;
Two observations:
a. The same people who say they can't vote for McCain because of Sarah Palin, willingly tell you that Joe Biden is a mental dirt clod and utterly incapable of standing in for a president...ever.
b. When I said I couldn't vote for Obama because he's a socialist - the answer was "Well, I'm a socialist". (Admirable honesty from someone not running for president - but next time I'm going straight to NAZI)
I’m here in Orange County NC and have travelled through most of the even semi-major roads in the southern part of the county. Obama signs dominate in Chapel Hill/Carrboro, of course, but once you get out into the country, I’d say the ratio is more 3:2 Obama:M/P, which is surprising because the parts of OC south of I-40 are typically almost as Democratic as Chapel Hill itself.
