Nun Says She Was Raped by Hindu Mob

NEW DELHI (Oct. 24) - A Roman Catholic nun who accused a Hindu mob of raping her said Friday that she will not cooperate with local police, alleging that they stood by idly during the attack. Hiding her head and face behind a scarf, the nun told reporters that she was raped after a mob attacked a Christian prayer hall on Aug. 25 in the eastern state of Orissa.

In her first public comments, the nun said a group of about 50 men tore off her clothes and raped her. Later, she said, she was paraded naked, together with a priest, past several policeman who refused to help her. When she arrived at the police station, officers tried to dissuade her from filing a complaint, she said. "I was raped and now I don't want to be victimized by Orissa police," she said, calling for a federal investigation.

I encourage the creation of an international woman’s movement that does only one thing: it encourages all women and girls to carry a small bladed weapon and to use it to cut aggressive males.

This is not an organized movement with leaders and a hierarchy. It is not a NGO. There is no budget, no order, just women and girls who talk to other women and girls and encourage them to carry a bladed weapon and use it against aggressive males.

It may be a 3” Sheffield serrated stainless knife, or just a sharp shard of glass found in the trash. It should be used to slash. But any woman or girl who meets another woman or girl who does not have such a weapon, must ask her why? And perhaps give her one to carry, if she has an extra.

The first women and girls who use their weapon will likely be hurt or even killed. Yet women and girls are already hurt and killed though they are unarmed.

But when women start to slash aggressive males, something wonderful will happen. Most of these men will have to pause, if just for a moment, and ask themselves “Is this woman armed?”

And in that moment, many men will decide that it is not worth it to attack, if there is even a chance that they might be injured in the attempt.

Some women and girls will be persecuted for defending themselves, but this will not last long, because even if arrested and put in jail, it is better than being raped and killed.

But the women’s movement begins when women and girls just talk to each other. When women and girls just accept that it is normal for them to have a weapon and to use it if needed. That if they do not have such a weapon, they feel uncomfortable in public, under dressed. And that they need to get one as soon as possible.

Because this is what women and girls do. Because.
