A Pittsburgh police commander says a volunteer for the McCain campaign who reported being robbed and attacked near a bank ATM in Bloomfield has confessed to making up the story. Police say charges will be filed. More details to follow.

This is very disappointing. I was willing to believe her until facts proved otherwise, and here they are. She lied. Case closed.

Actually I agree with the poster about one thing:

This is probably true because if she was carrying a gun the cutter would likely now be dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Then again sometimes the simplest explanation is the logical one. A young, unhinged and not very attractive woman makes a desperate attempt to get attention.

I think people are being too quick to judge Matt. I can almost guarantee that after this gets sorted out, the loony lady will turn out to be an Obama operative who staged this sideshow in an attempt to slime the McCain campaign. The Demrats have done these dirty tricks before. Drudge was correct to have published the original police report.
Please don't make the mistake of thinking everything posted on the internet or printed in a newpaper is legit. We need to all maintain a healthy skepticism.

Alot of Republicans voiced skepticism about this incident including Michelle Malkin and freepers. McCain will probably condemn such a hoax. So let me guess, Ashley will turn on Republicans, voice her support for Obama and the MSM will denounce “judgmental” Republicans for not running to the defense of this “poor” girl who just needs help, and oh, how the “hateful” Republicans brainwashed her in the first place. /sarc

Like many here, the minute it came out, I was in tears just reading the headline. It was several hours before the picture of the girl came out and people started questioning the whole thing.
Let the blame game go. The girl needs serious help and no one can be blamed for getting worked up over it either way. We need to get back to the important business of fighting to win this election before Obama and the democrats ruin this entire country.
As a Conservative and a person who grew up in the deep South in a time where Black men were were lynched by this type of wild of wild accusation I am proud of my fellow FReepers who, initially saw this report for what it was.

Seriously, though, I do think a contrast could be made. McCain and Palin simply need to say that they had been told one of their young volunteers was attacked and they called out of concern, and they're horrified to learn that she was a disturbed young woman who needs help. All of which is the truth.
Unlike the people who egged on Tawana Brawley (who supposedly told her lie simply because she had stayed out late that night and was afraid of her violent stepfather's reaction) and created the giant web of lies, the McCain campaign certainly can't be charged with attempting to perpetrate or encourage this in any way.
I'm not sure Obama and friends really want people reminded of the Tawana Brawley case. I'm sure Al Sharpton thinks it would get in the way of his appointment as Secretary of State.

One thing I really, really wish is that some of our posters would tone down the insults a bit. It’s possible to disagree without screaming insults, and in addition, I think it adds to the irrationality quotient here. It’s like stepping into the middle of a barroom brawl. Maybe the mods should be a little stricter on this, although I realize it’s hard to monitor.
I disagree. I think McCain should say, (a) He really hopes that she gets the help she needs (he has); and (b) he denounces and rejects race-baiting of any kind. Whatever her mental condition, her behaviour was detestable.
He could turn this into a positive with a strong “denounciation” statement like that.
That’s ok, I’d kick him in the face. No one. NO ONE. touches my toes and lives.
