Teens to be honored for heroism

OCEAN SPRINGS -- Two cadets with Ocean Springs High School's JROTC program each will receive a Medal of Heroism on Tuesday, an event that is almost unheard-of among the high school programs in this state.

The medal is one of the highest awards given in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and requires the rank of general to present it.

So on Tuesday, Maj. Gen. William Freeman with the Mississippi National Guard will come to the school to present the two medals.

The Medal of Heroism is sanctioned by the Department of the Army and is registered through the Army Cadet Command in Alabama.

"It's very rare (for a JROTC program) to have one," said Senior Army Instructor Steve Farragut, a retired Army colonel who heads the Ocean Springs program. "But to have two... "

Jerold Terpening and Greg Farmer are both 16 and juniors at Ocean Springs High. They both credit JROTC for giving them the discipline they needed to take the right action when confronted with an emergency. They didn't go back to school and brag, either. Farragut said he learned about both instances from other people.

In a letter dated April 2007, a month after the accident, the man thanked Farmer for the reassurance the teenager offered while helping him.

Terpening's act of heroism came at the end of his sophomore year when he helped evacuate a church bus that had caught fire. He went back into the bus to get the fire extinguisher and used it to put out the fire.

Farmer was even younger. Halfway through his freshman year, while on the way to a track meet, he stopped to help a man in a burning car. He and a small group of people lifted the car off the man, who was trapped upside-down in the vehicle.

Thanks for the ping. The school is about 15-20 miles from me. I’ll have to see if they are going to allow the public into the ceremony.

Those 2 young men are awesome! Thanks for posting—it’s so nice to see something positive these days about young people.

My folks live on the GulfCoast—there are lots of good people down there, in spite of the casinos! We always joked that the “sinful Gulf Coast” existed so the righteous folks upstate would have some place to party and vacation without their neighbors watching!
