Sarah Palin invoked Joe the Plumber and Joe the Quarterback last night in a combination political-pep rally in a packed football stadium in Beaver County -- an overwhelmingly Democratic blue-collar region being energetically sought by the Republican ticket in the waning days of the presidential campaign.
Ms. Palin, the GOP vice presidential nominee, invoked native son Joe Namath's upset win with the New York Jets in the 1969 Super Bowl and attacked Democratic nominee Barack Obama's economic proposals as socialism.
"He's hiding his agenda of redistributing your hard-earned money," Ms. Palin, the Alaska governor, told a raucous crowd at the Beaver High School Stadium.
She cited Mr. Obama's encounter earlier this month with Joe Wurzelbacher, a Toledo, Ohio, plumber who pressed him to explain his tax policies. At the time, Mr. Obama cited his proposal to raise taxes on incomes over $250,000 as an attempt to "spread the wealth."
"Somehow Joe accomplished something none of the rest of us has been able to do. He got our opponent to finally state his intentions in plain language," Ms. Palin said. "Joe the Plumber said it sounded like socialism. Now is not the time to experiment with socialism."
Even before Ms. Palin invoked that term, some in the crowd were shouting it, with one adding, "Tell him to go back to Indonesia. Tell him to show his birth certificate."

I meant to remove that ‘r’ in your name. Sorry about that.
eh who says Obama owns the youth vote?
Not much but it hurt. That still counts, right? :)
No, the whole point of Ms. is that it is the female equivalent of Mr. - no indication of marital status. Why should women’s marital status be included in their title when men’s isn’t? Its almost as if their value depends on it. Perhaps at one time but certainly no more.
“....I dont know about everyone here but I feel this race is turning. There is something breaking beneath the waters...”
I began to suspect the same thing a few days ago. Joe the Plumber got the ball rolling by asking a simple question.
The folks have seen what happens to anyone who crosses the ‘One’. We knew more about Joe in 24 hours than we have learned about the shadowy figures propping up 0bama in 22 months.
I think the dems are in deep trouble and they know it. Not wishing any harm to 0bama’s granny, but I see his Hawaii visit as a stunt.
We have to get the vote out! That is the key to winning this thing!
Because this ticket is promoting FAMILY VALUES; ie MARRIED with children.
I'd like to see that blared in the McCain ads.
Earl Morral was the starting qb for the Colts in that game, and underperformed miserably. Unitas only played in the second half and led them to their only td. But I was rooting for the Jets.
This battle between capitalism and socialism (that's not the real battle, but it'll do) HAS to be met. The longer we wait--and being afraid to call the dems the socialists they are is putting off the inevitable--the more entrenched the "what's wrong with it?" attitude takes hold.
We are basically growing a new electorate that believes the job of government is to redistribute wealth and give you stuff.
Can you blame them? I don’t!
But my point was that Ms. covers that situation as, of course, does Governor which, in this case, is far more appropriate.
Well, skinny little Frank Ryan beat Unitas 27-0 in the 1964 NFL Championship Game (pre-Super Bowl era). Jim Brown and Gary Collins helped a bit, too.
My point is off the key subject. I do not think the writer meant any malice, but it seems ingrained that many in society would feel the title Mrs. is somehow derogatory.
I did notice last night that when Hannity asked her whether BHO’s plan was socialist, she didn’t use the word. I hope the heck the McCain campaign didn’t tell her to stop...it’s working....
You have a point, but of the 4 young men whose faces we can see, 3 of them are very obviously looking at Sarah's face (looking her in the eye). The fourth's gaze is hard to ascertain. Kudos to those 3 guys as at their age the fact that their intellect and integrity has trumped their raging hormones is noteworthy.
Perhaps some older people. Younger women take it as a given. I actually find it offensive to have to provide marital status on first introduction.
