What is the deal with Obama's birth certificate and citizenship status?

Pamela Gellers at Atlas Shrugs raises some apparent shenanigans with the birth certificate the Obama campaign previously produced. Meanwhile, Philip J. Berg, a former Deputy AG of Pennsylvania and a professed Hillary supporter, filed a lawsuit claiming Obama is not constitutionally eligible to be president; instead of simply clearing up any questions — which you would think would take about five minutes — Obama's lawyers moved to dismiss the suit and failed to file a timely answer, meaning that, under the applicable rules (according to Berg), Obama is legally deemed to have admitted Berg's allegations that he is constitutionally ineligible to be president.

Admittedly, I've ignored this issue up until now on the theory that if there was anything here worth looking at, surely the Hillary and McCain campaigns would have raised it. But this all seems very strange. It's not just a matter of whether Obama was born in Hawaii — Berg claims he wasn't, but most others seem to agree he was (though the publicly available proof seems shaky at this point). There is also the question whether he was also a citizen of one or more other countries (Kenya? Indonesia?) and whether that means, as a matter of law, that he could not be a "natural born" citizen as required by the Constitution.

Has anyone around here looked into this? Is it a serious issue, and why does Obama seem to be so squirmy about it?

I just this week sought a pistol permit in TN (had one for Alabama) and had to provide a certified copy of my birth cert from Washington, DC! Can you imagine, a citizen required to provide a birth cert to do the thing the Constitution says I can do. And this little MArxist squirrel doesn’t have to prove he’s unimpeachably a U.S. Citizen? Michelle Obama sadi there was no law that could stop he husband becoming president. I don’t doubt $600 million will buy a very good fake birth cert, aged and everything!

Yes, why not simply quash the whole bit by giving documentation that should be trivial to produce?

If Senator "Coke-head" Obama is unwilling to do such a simple task that would show that he is even eligible to serve as President of the United States, why should anyone think that he would be willing to do far harder work for us in the very challenging duties of President of the United States?

By the way, I'd like to be a little bit more inquisitive than the average reporter out there and observe that we've been hearing and reading for at least three days now that Obama's grandmother is deathly ill and that he's going to rush to her side in Hawaii.

Now, if he's already won the presidency, why hasn't he already gone to Hawaii? Why is he not already there? What's he waiting for? "If she's deathly ill," I'm pretending to be a reporter here. You know they'd ask McCain these questions. "If Obama's grandmother is deathly ill, why has this been announced days ago and he's only going now," or tomorrow, or whenever it is. Now, I understand, folks, Snerdley's got his head buried in his hands. I understand this, my friends, anything said about Obama is going to be turned into an unfair racist attack on the man. Am I not asking obvious questions? Who announces days in advance they're rushing to the side of a loved one who is deathly ill but keeps campaigning in a race that's said to be over, only to go to the loved one's side days later? See, I think this is about something else. You know what's really percolating out there? I've been laying low on this because it hasn't met the threshold to pass the smell test on this program.

This birth certificate business, this lawsuit that a guy named Philip Berg filed in Philadelphia in August for Obama to produce his genuine birth certificate and he still hasn't replied. You've got a deathly ill grandmother, you are going to rush to her side a few days from now, when you first announced this, you're going to rush, you're going to hurry, you're going to make tracks, you're going to get over there because you don't want your grandmother to die before you got there like your mother did, but somehow you keep campaigning, you take three days to get over there, if he's left yet, and this birth certificate business, I'm just wondering if something's up. I have no clue, and folks, I'm telling you, this has not reached the threshold until now, and it's popping up all over the place. There are a lot of people now that are starting to speculate and be curious about this.

I don't know, let's say for example that somebody does come up with proof that something's screwy with his birth certificate and something's screwy about the fact that he's allegedly a natural citizen, American citizen, but may not be, dual citizenship, born in Kenya, who knows, there's all kinds of stuff out -- so what? What's going to happen this late in the campaign? Do you think if it's proven that they're going to dump him? That's not going to happen. But still, these are just questions that I have. And, look, both of my parents have died. When I was told the end was near, bam, I got there, fast as I could. I didn't announce to the audience, "I just got word my father is said to be passing away and in four or five days I'm going to go to Missouri. In the meantime, I will not leave you here on this radio program." These are just natural questions. I think any inquisitive reporter -- I know the risk I'm running here by raising all this. But I wouldn't be me if I didn't do that.

Andy hasn’t learned that only the little people can be questioned about their past, origins and alliances. You can’t question “the One” No Joe the Plumber, go ahead liens, dirt, real name, never mind about Obama and his failure to pay old civil fines and all his multiple names.

Tell me Freepers how many articles have you heard about Barry’s multiple names? Its ok to question Joe the Plumber, chilling effect on speech, but questioning is out of bounds on the candidate?

It would maybe go better for the Obama shills if they stay away from the issue of “people’s real name” The Press is just starting to check people’s background. Nightline Co-anchor Martin Bashir derided, “But his name’s not Joe and he’s not a registered plumber. And those are only half his problems.” Wow. How many stories did they do about Barack Hussien Obama’s real name Barry Soetoro or Barry Dunham. What is his real name. Oh he told us so we just need to take his word for it.

If he produces a document I want it subjected to more testing than the Shroud of Turin...against rigorously *KNOWN* samples of birth certificates from that same year.

Hint: I think he is going "full court press" Kenya/Odinga style.

Second Hint: But that won't help him...he will be overwhelmingly defeated; hopefully the country will cleanse a bunch of the Gramscian detritus in the process.

I’ve said this before, but I agree with you. It’s NOT the citizenship...it’s all about what name is ON the BC.

My guess...his name is plain ol’ Barry Dunham...he changed it to Barak Hussein Obama....and the questions will be ...why???

My thoughts and thinking....are this.

I am a law abiding person. I don't "look" like a criminal. I drive nice cars, and I willfully don't break laws.

IF...I get pulled over..."they" aren't going to "pat me down."

I've never been pulled over.....where they have asked me if I had any weapons. Period.

The POINT being...I am NOT asking anyone...for my RIGHT to carry.

I’ve always thought there wasn’t much to it until today when the FEC seemed to join the Obama campaign for a dismissal. Why would the FEC get involved and want the case to go away? To avoid embarrassment, maybe? I don’t know, but the FEC’s involvement made me get out my tin foil hat.

I’m a bit cynical, but with Barack Obama in Hawaii, I’m guessing he has a good chance of producing a birth certificate from some helpful public records person there. Hawaii is pretty liberal.

My theory is that SOMETHING ELSE would be discovered if they released the information. They fear something else that doesn’t involve citizenship, and if push comes to shove, after elected he could get into it, but perhaps he thinks he would lose the election of the SOMETHING ELSE was known.

That's what I think as well. I can't imagine not being a citzen getting pass the Clintons, but something else....maybe. I kind of wonder if his parents weren't married or if it was a statutory rape thing. But neither one of these would reflect on him.....so I don't know.
