Forest fires are probably difficult to do as a terror weapon. Sure, you might burn a few acres, or even a few hundred, but they’ll probably be in remote areas, and are subject to weather. It’s almost impossible for a forest fire to burn much if there’s any snow cover, and winds and rain can also impact success.

That may be true back east, but here in the West, in the land of little rain, 70,000 acre forest fires are not all that uncommon.

“In 2003 an FBI memo alerted law enforcement agencies that an al-Qaeda terrorist being held in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.

It was reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country.

“The detainee believed that significant damage to the U.S. economy would result and once it was realized that the fires were terrorist acts, U.S. citizens would put pressure on the U.S. government to change its policies,” the memo said.”

What's next will he be putting flaming bags of doggie-do on the capital steps, ringing the bell and hiding?

I have never heard of Obama or Biden described as flaming bags of doggie-do, but, okay.

Beg to differ. Considering how a single idiot can do it accidentally, a half dozen jihadis could easily do thousands of square miles

He lives in a desert cave

I'm pretty sure he's in a cave.

Not so sure about the "live" part, though ...

By William M. Welch, USA TODAY July 18, 2008
LOS ANGELES —
Firefighters have contained nearly 1,500 of 1,781 wildfires that have broken out across the tinder-dry state since thunderstorms June 20 brought fire-starting lightning.

The fires have consumed almost 840,000 acres in national forests as well as state, private and local land.

The fires have consumed more acres than the firestorms last fall across Southern California, fanned by hot desert winds. More than 642,000 acres were burned, including large sections of neighborhoods in and around San Diego.

>>>>Late last week, the governor ordered 2,000 National Guard personnel to join firefighters. Monday, firefighters from Australia, Greece, Mexico and New Zealand were en route to California to assist efforts, CalFire said in a statement.<<<<<

Several big fires were more than 50% contained, the governor’s Office of Emergency Services said, including a fire that has burned almost 120,000 acres and threatened Big Sur along the coast. It is 61% contained, and 1,400 residences remain threatened; 27 homes have been destroyed.

A fire that once threatened the Southern California coastal town of Santa Barbara is 90% contained.

Here’s hoping that the first forest targeted for incineration has a bunch of trees with those Berkeley tree-sitting wackos in them.

I subscribed to the Homeland Security website a few weeks ago. It’s been interesting. It’s free to sign up.

Received this announcement recently:

This is bad news, because it shows the terrorists are using their imagination. We’re doing pretty good covering the standard terrorists plots, but there are tons of targets they could hit if they thought about it (thankfully they haven’t.)

The most scary non-9/11 terrorist act was the DC sniper (imho), because it was so random. It had the DC area on alert for months, and what was it? Two guys, a gun, and a sedan. Pretty easy to pull off even now.

If they took that random acts of violence approach, it would have an impact.

Random forest fires.
Random building fires (home and office, how hard is it to get a few gallos of gas and a match?)
Random sniper shootings.
There was a guy years ago dropping large bricks off freeway overpasses onto car windshields. Killed a woman. Never caught.

Terrorist have focused on the big event (planting bombs at buildings, taking down a bridge, etc...) and that is where our focus has been, but if the go for a lot of small, easy targets things could get very ugly.

“He lives in a desert cave and hasn’t seen a real tree in over a decade. What does he know about burning them?”

“LONDON — Documents recovered from a remote area along the Pakistan border have revealed that Osama bin Laden wants al-Qaida to launch a “global fireball” by lighting forest fires in Europe, the United States, Australia and South America, according to a report from Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.”

“so now he’s an eco-terrorist?”

On the bright side, maybe the tree-huggers will declare war against Islamic terrorists.

Actually, the EnviroFreaks will have nervous breakdowns because they won't know which ideology to follow . . . Eco or Lefto.

Won't be a pretty picture at all.

Is this what Biden was talking about? Breaking News: Joe Biden is set to address the nation on the devastating forest fires raging in the United States. Joe Biden: Ladies and Gentlemen, I warned you about this, what I'm about to tell you is not a joke, I'm being serious, literally, President Obama has decided to let the fires burn, now it may not be apparent why he has made this decision, you have to trust us that this is the best thing in the country. We need your support, you can trust me, I have forgotten more about governing than any of you will ever know, I know Bin Laden, in the Seventies we hit many Karachi nightclubs, I know how to talk to him. My lame attempt at humor.

Well, we’re almost there.

If the polls are right, we’re about to send a flaming bag of doggie-do to the capital.

Ok, al-Qaeda. You burn trees here, we burn trees in Mecca. What, there are no trees in Mecca? No problem, a ‘shroom cloud will do the job.

About three hundred were reported as reaching North America

During WWII, my grandfather's logging crew found one of these in Northern Idaho. Obviously, it hadn't detonated. Some military people came, confirmed what it was, and removed it. The discovery was not publicly announced so that the Japanese wouldn't learn that these balloons were successfully reaching North America.
