There is no way that in the US we would roundup every illegal immigrant -there are about 12 million of the illegal immigrants- not only economically is that just an impossibility but that's not a humane way anyway to deal with the issue that we face with illegal immigration.
Do you then favor an amnesty for the 12 or 13 million undocumented immigrants?
No, I do not. I do not. Not total amnesty. You know, people have got to follow the rules. They've got to follow the bar, and we have got to make sure that there is equal opportunity and those who are here legally should be first in line for services being provided and those opportunities that this great country provides.
To clarify, so you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?
I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here. It is so important that yes, people follow the rules so that people can be treated equally and fairly in this country.

I will tell you, I wish that there were more hours in the day so that we can get out there and to more of the communities with such the strong Latino vote that is out there and really tell them that we desire to work for them. We are asking them to hire us and let us work for them.

There was an attempt made, during Senate debate on the 1996 immigration bill, to eliminate the “chain migration” provision that Senator Kennedy had slipped into the 1965 immigration bill. Total annual legal immigration had increased from less than 300,000 in 1965 to more than a million a year primarily because of the ‘65 bill’s provisions allowing immigrants to send for all of their adult relatives. Then each of those relatives can send for their and their spouse’s adult relatives, creating an endless chain with fractel-like growth. An anchor baby, born on American soil and with American citizenship, serves as the first link in the chain (the ruling giving citizenship to children born on U.S. soil regardless of their parents legal status here goes back to 1898.) But Senator Simpson’s attempt to stem chain migration failed, to a great extent thanks to Spencer Abraham, who lost his bid for re-election partially as a result of the role he played in getting some of the strongest provisions removed from the 1996 bill and partially because Michigan in the meantime was overrun by Middle East immigrants who voted Democrat in that election. Hoist on his own open-border petard.

I grew up with people who were able to escape towards the end of the war and also lived in a neighborhood with dozens and dozens of people fresh out of the concentration camps.

McCain needed Palin to keep her mouth shut on this one. I’ve seen many rabid anti-illegal immigration/anti-amnesty FReepers change their minds about voting (for) McCain ONLY because she’s on the ticket, thinking she’d knock some sense into him after the election.
McCain could win this election easily, just by renouncing his position on this one issue. He CHOOSES not to. Frankly, I’d rather he do so, and unite the party, than waste his time trying to get anyone to hear the negatives about Obama. The problem is that employers, lobbyists, and bureaucrats might have a different idea of “our country has a need” from workers who can lose their jobs, or have their wages lowered.
It’s a misreading of the 14th amendment, originally introduced to grant citizenship to the former slave population. If they were born in the US, they’re a citizen.
It’s been corrupted by liberal judges to include anyone who sneaks in illegally to have a baby.
The SC needs to revisit the precedent or the 14th needs to be repealed.
