How To Credibly Establish Troll Credentials On A Conservative Site
RedState ^ | 10/21/08 | Lord Vegas

Posted on 10/22/2008 8:52:19 AM PDT by StatenIsland

The problem most of our less than intelligent trolls have in coming to a Conservative website in order to spread discord and dispirit the troops is their own leftist insticts to throw bombs.

Poeple, people, people, you can't ALL be Bill Ayers! The world would be a terribly anarchistic hell-hole if everyone was throwing bombs. Some of you have to learn subtlety, in infiltrating the ranks of the Conservative Right -- infiltrate and form a fifth column from within.

Allow me to explain how it can be, and has been done.

Selecting a screen name

When selecting a screen name it is important to select something that does not tell too much about your true agenda. NOTATROLL while subtle, is not nearly subtle enough. Likewise NOTANIDEALOGUE or RIGHTWINGCRAZY, while they might convey the message you hope, are a little to obvious.

It is much better to pick something innocuous that has no political connection at all. INFINITY is good.

Learn the lay of the land and establish rapport.

When you walk into the place and immediately start throwing bombs, MOE or someone just like him will throw them right back at you -- and while you have your wits, such as they are, they have the ability to shut you out. We call it BLAM!

Now, you might find a certain self-satisfaction in a suicide bombing, but as al-Qaeda has learned once all the good suicide bombers are dead, it becomes more difficult to find subsequent bombers of any quality. Frankly, at this point, the quality is becoming pretty thin.

On the other hand, carefully observing the posters for a short while can allow you to discover what is acceptable dissent, and what will earn you THE HEAP.

For instance, after a suitable time of reconnaissance, you might discover that subtle jabs at Sen John McCain might be totally acceptable. You might then offer comments like:

Sorry folks, but in this political climate, McCain is not going to win on his own merits. He has to make the election about Obama's radical leftist policies...

And if you are called on that you could reestablish your Conservative creds by saying:

...if McCain had picked Romney, the obama team would've gone after his wealth and slick persona, but they wouldn't dare question his experience and knowledge of economics/business.

If the water becomes too hot, or people begin to question your sincerity, take a break and lay low for a few days before coming back on some other thread.

Remember your roots in the leftosphere. They don't call you a Concern Troll for nothing. While the left is much sharper in recognizing this type of troll (after all it is very difficult to fake a mental illness), the right is particulary susceptible to this type of trolling. The following is perfect to establish Conservative creds:

I'm getting extremely worried about the state of the election. Even if the ABC poll is erroneous, there is no doubt that the momentum has shifted decisively to obama. The financial meltdown is helping him tremendously.

Moreover, the McCain campaign has been sloppy for the past 2 weeks. They're not running sharp negative ads, and they seem completely caught off guard by the financial crisis.

See how that works? Sincere concern, while slapping the candidate up beside the head. Remember, it is important to remain polite, all the while, undermining the confidence in the candidate and the candidate's decisions. After a debate performance, for instance, this would be a perfect response:

With all due respect, I think Biden won the debate. He was simply more substantive and demonstrated his mastery of the facts, especially in foreign policy. More importantly though, Biden effectively made the argument that McCain is an extension of Bush, something Palin never addressed. She changed the subject multiple times when the topic was thorny by going back to energy or talking about a tangential topic.

I want McCain to win badly, but at this point, I don't quite see how they can pull it off...

Polite and demoralizing. Well done indeed.

Posting a Blog

After you have established a certain level of credibility through commenting on other posts, it is now time to post your own blog. It is important to create just the right climate of dispair. A good first post, for instance might talk about the candidates flaws -- in a concerned sort of way. We could call it "McCain's Real Problem" off the top of my head.

A wonderful way of attacking him might be right there in front of you, using the concerns that Conservatives have already expressed.

I think McCain's biggest problem is not his campaign staff or even the financial crisis. Rather, it's his lack of authentic conservative principles on a number of issues.

Now that would be a great way to start, and it could be ended with:

The GOP base could have nominated Rudy, a man who used conservative principles to revive NYC after three decades of liberal mismanagement, or Romney, a smart conservative ex-businessman. Rather, they rejected those men because of single issues like abortion or mormonism.

I sincerely wish McCain prevails and hopes that he wakes up and smells the coffee. But if he loses, I think the GOP also needs to reassess itself.

See, it is only out of concern for the party that you offer advice on what is wrong with the candidate and why he is going to have his head handed to him by the Democrats in November.

Now, there is much more that you can do. Citing polls that reflect negatively on the candidate, while ignoring any shift toward the candidate, or without noting flaws in those negative polls, offers plenty of opportunity for fifth column activity.

We welcome all of you trolls, as after all, it is the arena of ideas that offers you the chance to try to demoralize our side. But, don't believe for one minute that we do not see through you like pane of glass.

Excellent analysis and spot on! The “I am concerned” trolls are all over this site, especially on the poll threads.

I believe I've read almost this exact quote many times from newbies.

The left is scared. They, along with their komrades in the media, have done EVERYTHING in their power to put Obama over the top, and they STILL haven’t sealed the deal. The polls are incredibly skewed, and in many instances they still can’t manage more than 5point advantage. Obama and Biden have run one of the most inept campaigns in history, with each passing day supplying gaffes that would destroy them if not for the media coverups. Fellow conservatives, let’s drive a stake thru the heart of liberalism on election day. Tell friends and family to ignore over-sampled polls and defeat Obama...

If it is a whinoCon, it isn’t a Conservative, period. It is either a liberal troll, a third party troll, or a closet anarchist.

Mercy! I think I read that one a few times!

Wow, given your list of attributes approximately 25 to 40 percent of FreeRepublic are trolls.

How about the 90+ % of people here early on in the campaign that stated in the numerous FreeRepublic polls there was no way they would vote for John McCain

I've found that the most common screen names among trolls are things like:

"HardcoreReaganGuy" or "UltraConservative" or "GOProcks" etc.

Obviously, we're too stupid to sniff out such folks if they disguise their screen names properly.

Don't let the leftwing kooks demoralize you! See below:

If McCain had let Palin loose right after picking her instead of wasting precious weeks of campaign time, then we wouldn't be in this situation and there wouldn't be so many sincerely disheartened FReepers who you have to sort through to find the genuine trolls.

I was banned as a troll back in 95, when the site first started , for espousing what were seen as commercial views regarding my field of interest at the time

Oh how difft FR was back then! Clinton was still in his 1st term and the scandals were unbeleivable-

It is funny to think how many trolls are out there

the left simply has no ideas and their sites all SUCK, and thus they need to come to FR to see the real news

I would never bother to read that drivel they put up

Now hopefully this year there is ENOUGH conservatives balring the horns about this Islamomarxist trojan horse to convince enough wobbly libs and moderates to (a) not vote for Barry or (b) vote for McCain

Well do not forget the undecideds...believe me when I say. NO blacks are undecided! Anybody undecided at this point is a moron but I think they can be turned to McCain at 65% cause all blacks are all in already for Obama.
