Fresh Moose (Why Sarah Palin is a locavore.)

When John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate, hunting entered the national conversation in a way it hasn't since 2006, when Dick Cheney shot a donor instead of a quail. Palin, in fashioning herself as a leader for Joe Six-Pack America, has emphasized her prowess as a sportswoman. Her office has released photos of her with a dead moose, a dead caribou, and several dead salmon. She was recently spotted in Pennsylvania carrying a tote bag with the logo "Real Women Hunt Moose." One bowhunting company was so excited (or shameless) that it introduced a new model called the Sarah-Cuda in honor of the governor. Love the pink camo.

While Palin and Cheney are both hard-nosed Republicans, they represent different aspects of the hunting tradition. Cheney, who favors canned hunts on private game reserves, shoots his beasts in the manner of aristocrats. Palin, gutting moose in her neighbor's basement, is an heir to the "potlatch" hunters of the Colonial era, who wanted meat for the cabin table. When Palin was running for governor in 2006, she told USA Today, "We hunt as much as we can, and I'm proud to say our freezer is full of wild game we harvested here in Alaska." And if you look twice at the reasons why Palin hunts, they resemble an ideal cherished by city-dwelling, New York Times-reading folks. Sarah Palin is a locavore, harvesting meat from her local "foodshed."

She's also, of course, trying to harvest votes. Hunting has been a useful political symbol since Teddy Roosevelt. When Field & Stream posted Palin's hunting and fishing photos on its Web site, high-fives broke out among the assembled commenters. "You don't find people in Washington who would be seen with their hands on a bloody caribou,"

Maybe they just claim to be hunters, as this picture documents her parents are passive TV watchers. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Its interesting to watch the East Coast liberals view the frontier culture of America with boorish disdain. Most of them couldn't survive an environmental crisis, or even know how to tie three or four basic survival knots.

Yet they decry a woman who was raised in frontier culture and flourished in it, as well as wearing formal gowns and heels on those occasions when necessary?

One would think that feminists would embrace the Annie Oakley tradition of America. But then, who was Annie Oakley? Isn't that a restaurant franchise out West somewhere?

Palin is detested by the left because she gives a continuity to an America the left will require ALL of America to abandon. A paroxysm of revisionist history is about to occur, the knives and pencils are already being sharpened by the likes of Ward Churchill and William Ayers. And on top of all that, the Holocaust never happened.

Palin, gutting moose in her neighbor’s basement

Quite a trick to coax a live moose into the basement...of course we are probably dealing with an writer here that will not have his/her/its’ beef served up rare because he/she/it doesn’t want to cause suffering to the cow.

A central tenet of preserving wildlife is that we must remove the economic value from an animal. Otherwise, extensive poaching and habitat destruction follow.

That tenet is mistaken. One cannot "remove" the economic value from anything anyone is tempted to purchase. It was tried with elephants in Africa to the detriment of the species. "Removing" the value of ivory increased it on the black market and caused poaching to soar.

When and where economic value was restored there was an economic incentive to cultivate the animals - private preserves wherein controlled harvesting takes the place of uncontrolled and illegal poaching. Those animals flourish.

As far as sneering about grocery-store purchase of meat being some sort of "new sin" the author misses the point entirely. The disdain is very much in the other direction by people who are being patently hypocritical about taking life for sustenance. It is simply another manifestation of the widespread contempt the urban show to the rural on a routine basis. It isn't a two-way street and pretending that it is, is simply a compounding of an already insufferable offense.

Dick Cheney shot a “donor” in the face with bird shot. I guess that Sarah has to up the ante. “Hey Dick, I’ll see you one laywer and raise you one moose”. One can dream.

who was Annie Oakley

Interestingly enough, Little Sure Shot" (called that originally by Sitting Bull), was born in 1860 in Ohio, and also died in Ohio, 66 years later. Her parents, including her War of 1812 veteran father, hailed from Pennsylvania.

Battle ground states then, and battleground states now. :)

Even Sarah would not try to gut a live moose. I believe she shoots them first, then drags them into the neighbor's basement. She probably doesn't actually gut them in the basement, that's done in the field. But she might butcher them down there, hauling them down in major chucks of Moose.

El Gato, I really think Annie Oakley is an undersung hero in America. She learned to shoot in order to help her mom feed a large family of 6 siblings, after her dad moved on.

Annie han phenomenal perception and coordination in the use of firearms. That skill came from caring for others.

I do believe that Sarah Palin, and many Freeper women like LucyT,Allegra and many others are participants in that tradition and in the consequent use of arms as a feminine conservative cultural lineage.

No wonder theat the lefties and the moonbat MSM can’t stand Sarah Palin. She in anathema to everything the left stands for, in her self reliance, independence from government and action oriented style of life.

Sarah Palin RULES!

It must be mentioned that the Palin family shows remarkable good health due to eating wild meat. Amazing bone structure and dental arches.

I wonder if Sarah is aware of how good her Alaskan diet is.
