Some of the posts on here are so so so amusing! Let's see, the implication that any woman who doesn't support Sarah is a lesbian? That any one who supports Obama is "unwashed"? The more comments I read, the more taken aback. What happened to actual conservatism? Did you all catch the McCain bug where if you disagree with someone you vilify them? Anyone care to come out of the woodwork and speak realistically?
Soggy leaves are not worth the effort, unless you have a formula for turning them into ethanol in some manner.
Theoretically, that should be possible. Presumably, it would involve shredding them into some kind of pulp which would then be subjected to bacterial or microbial action that would preferentially produce a combustible alcohol.
Separating the alcohol, and energizing the process, one would wish to use solar energy.
Ideally, all of this could be done with clear, plastic, disposable bags. Just let them line your driveway, soaking up sunshine, and fermenting alcohol to be tapped off after a few days.
What’s missing from this is the feed organism, bred or developed in a lab and marketed as a powder. Sprinkle the powder on the soggy leaves, and close the bag.
It may come about. Who knows? We used to just scrape the leaves together and burn them. We don’t do that anymore.
Back to reality, you’ll be better off if you can let them dry a bit first. It also helps if you can get someone else to do it.
As am I. It would be fun to have an actual table made with that information.
"Okay, you sit with the noble gases, and I'll be over here with the trans-Uranics."
LOL
It would be no fun if you used a tablecloth, though.
Never did around here. You'd have to wait for a dry spell -- sometime around early to mid August.
Done as much as I’m going to do today. Don’t want to overdue it.
I’m still persevering.
Slowly.
Me too.
Good evening. Got the byos and grilz to bed and the catz fed. Sure is peaceful now.
Pretty quiet here. Bagged the company “Festivus” party tonight because the cough was back up a bit this afternoon. But at least the neighbors will see that some raking’s been done.
A cough is as good a reason as any :-). Congrats on the raking - we don’t have to do that, our trees are too little.
I’m just about to take the banana bread out of the pan. Turned out I did have some chocolate chips in the freezer, but I didn’t find them until I’d already bought more. Now I have enough for several more confections.
I went slow and the raking wasn't too bad. Front yard & along the road. Still have drive, back yard, the gardens and the piper's walk (brick patio out front -- just the right size and shape for a piping competition stage). It would be easier but for the cedar fronds; they're heavier when wet and always hard to rake.
What will you do with the chocolate chips?
Bran muffins, maybe, or pancakes. I’m out of rotten bananas, for now!
For as long as I've had this one, I'm definitely taking it easy. It's nearly gone now.
Kind of a shame about the party, but the last few I've attended (when I happened not to be somewhere else in the world when they were held) weren't so much fun. But we've had a lot of new hires in the past year and I wanted LoM to meet them.
I came home this past Monday to the smell of yummy things baking, and found that my daughter (with some help from the Missus) had made a FRESH pumpkin pie for me — from scratch.
Most of the pumpkin pies I’ve had were from canned pumpkin, and they’re usually pretty good, but getting one that was “scratch built” was a REAL treat, and THIS one was extra special because it was my daughter’s first attempt.
Well, let me tell you, she did GOOD.
Pass the whipped cream...
My husband has made fresh pumpkin pies. I’m not fond enough of it to start with to consider it worth the extra effort.
Many years ago, in the '80s I think, for whatever reason (probably caloric) LoM made a tofu pumpkin pie. And I have to say, the first time I had it I didn't like it much. Rather dry (this from me? I don't like soppy food as a rule), lighter and somewhat bland -- quite different from the custard we call pumpkin pie.
Second time, I fell in love with it. Normal pumpkin pie now tastes like candy; there are more flavors discernable in tofu pumpkin pie than in the regular stuff.
Unfortunately LoM now has a mild soy allergy, but she still bakes a tofu pumpkin pie for me at Thanksgiving and Christmas. (She uses canned pumpkin -- scratch is a LOT of work!)
My wife has no taste for them, and it turns out, now, that my daughter’s no real fan, either. With half the family disliking them, I’m fortunate to get any pumpkin pies at all, so I’m just that much more flattered that they put in the effort to make them from scratch.
I make sweet potato pies with just sweet potatoes and spices. Very nutritious. Pumpkin (canned) goes in soups or the Alarming Election Chili.
