The "socialist" label that Sen. John McCain and his GOP presidential running mate Sarah Palin are trying to attach to Sen. Barack Obama actually has long and very ugly historical roots.
J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI from 1924 to 1972, used the term liberally to describe African Americans who spent their lives fighting for equality.
Those freedom fighters included the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who led the Civil Rights Movement; W.E.B. Du Bois, who in 1909 helped found the NAACP which is still the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization; Paul Robeson, a famous singer, actor and political activist who in the 1930s became involved in national and international movements for better labor relations, peace and racial justice; and A. Philip Randolph, who founded and was the longtime head of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and a leading advocate for civil rights for African Americans.
McCain and Palin have simply reached back in history to use an old code word for black. It set whites apart from those deemed unAmerican and those who could not be trusted during the communism scare.

Here’s a tip.
If you really want to send a lib into a tailspin, call him a Fascist, then back it up with examples of “liberal” fascist policies.
Gee, aren’t most of the socialists in the world white?
Socialism = Black? News to me but maybe they know something I don’t. And I thought I knew that agenda quite well.
Punctuation isn’t my thang.
“monkeys”, not “monkey’s”.
And all the socialists in China are..... Chinese.
Since most of the world's socialists are Chinese, does this mean that when you call someone a socialist you are calling them Chinese?
“What’s up, my Socialist?!?”
I see a red door and I want to paint it Socialist.
I’m back in Socialist, hit the sack, it’s been too long I’m glad to be back...
Next up - Led Zeppelin singing “Socialist Dog.”
Socialist Velvet
Oh, man - that’s it. I quit.
Socialist stands for poverty wonk!
Your skin can be any color for this attitude which brings about a very low altitude.
"You know that package?"
"The one for our friend in Jersey?"
"No, the other package."
"You mean the one from Brooklyn?"
"No, I mean the other package.
"Oh, yeah. What's happening with it?"
"It won't be showing up again."
Anyone remember Charlie Rangel saying: "Tax cuts are a code word for racism"? I do.
If these people would learn to stop thinking in euphemisms to hide what they're up to, maybe they would learn to just listen to what's being said instead of assuming everything is a code word for something nefarious.
Hoover called plenty of people commies. And Robeson was a Stalinist. Case closed.
I have never thought of blacks as socialists. When I think of American socialists they are New England, NY and NJ liberals and the elite, labor unions, etc. Am I wrong?

“He can take any word or any situation and call it racist.”
If he thought everything around him was related to little green-clad people with beards, top hats, and Irish accents, we’d heavily medicate him and determine him too mentally unstable to work. But, since he rants about race, we give him a soapbox for his preaching. Dear Sweet Lord, this country is going down the tubes.
Seriously. I thought this was a joke.
I didn’t think this kind of manure existed outside of Cambridge, MA.
Last time I checked, there were about 172,000 words in the english language and it seems that they’ll take just about every one of them and turn it into a racist code word.
WOW!! I didn’t know that I was writing in code language when I said that one of our candidates would lead us into socialism in a letter to the editor that I wrote recently. I didn’t think that I even knew another language. COOL!!!. Now I can say that I am bilingual.
I always wondered what happened to Urkel after he grew up.
Actually it’s the other way around. To say that “socialist” means “Black” or “African-American” is bigotry. Also stupidity. I wonder what A. Philip Randolph would have made of this nonsense.
Well, “gay” used to mean “happy,” so I guess words just change usage over time. Get over it.
