COLUMBUS, OHIO — The following is a partial transcript of the Oct. 19, 2008, edition of "FOX News Sunday With Chris Wallace":

"FOX NEWS SUNDAY" HOST CHRIS WALLACE: And hello again today from the campaign trail in Columbus, Ohio. Joining us now to talk about the state of the race with little more than two weeks to go is Senator John McCain.

And, Senator, welcome back to "FOX News Sunday."

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE JOHN MCCAIN: Thanks, Chris, nice to be back with you.

WALLACE: Let's start with where this race stands now, 16 days before the election. According to the latest RealClearPolitics average of national polls, you trail Obama by seven points, 50-43.

And take a look at the latest electoral map from Karl Rove based on public state polls. He has Obama leading in states with 313 electoral votes, 43 more than he needs to win the presidency. You lead in states with 171 electoral votes.

Senator McCain, aren't you in a world of trouble? Related

MCCAIN: All right, look. First of all, there are polls this morning — reliable — Zogby, Rasmussen, Gallup — all those that show us in the margin of error or somewhat behind. Are we behind? Sure. I'm the underdog.

I've always — I've been the underdog in a number of races, and we're very happy with the way the campaign is going. I'm very happy with the debate — went there the other night.

And look, I've been on enough campaigns, my friend, to sense enthusiasm and momentum, and we've got it, and I — again, I don't have to look at polls, but the polling numbers have closed dramatically in the last few days.

We're going to be in a tight race and we're going to be u

"I'm saying that history shows us where unlimited amounts of money are in political campaigns, it leads to scandal.

"I'm saying this is the first since the Watergate scandal that any candidate for president of the United States, a major party candidate, has broken the pledge to take public financing.

"We enacted those reforms because of that scandal. We know that we let unlimited amounts of money — in this case $200 million unreported — and there's already been stories of people who have made small contributions multiple times and all that.

"I'm saying it's laying a predicate for the future that can be very dangerous. History has shown that."

Wow, I thought McCain had fixed the campaign donation system once and for all.

WALLACE: If Barack Obama is elected president with bigger — and it looks likely that that's what's going to happen — Democratic majorities in the House and the Senate, how will things be different in this country by the end of his first term?

Wow...just unbelievable.

“Chris Wallace is a tool.”

He’s definitely a tool, but he asked the tough questionsand McCain was ready for them and given time to make his case and refute them - I think McCain did very well in defending his positions and in defending his critiques of Obama.

Every time people bring up Ayers, Socialism and the real story about Obama, McCain wins.

I watched all of it.

John McCain scored heavily when describing Obama’s $200,000,000 that is not traceable.

In general John scored when he argued and interrupted Wallace. But, John is always quick to back down which gives back the points he scored.

I was pleased until the very end just before Wallace led him into the loser’s circle and asked him if he would be disappointed if he lost.

I hated McCain’s answer. It was a polite answer, full of admirable humility. BUT it reeked of a sense that it is OK to lose. I had expected John McCain to come out blasting to say that losing was not an option

In fairness to Chris Wallace, I prefer him to Brokaw, Stephanopolous, and Bob Scheafer.

That is faint praise indeed. I just get tired when the first thing an interviewer asks is, “You are 7 points behind and we all know you are going to lose. Will you please admit that you will lose the election so we can get that out of the way?”

WALLACE: But while people are interested in Governor Palin, there seem to be growing doubts about her qualifications to be vice president.

McCain’s response is OK. Not great.

Here’s mine:

“Seriously? Among whom? I mean, besides the media, besides the abortion industry, besides elitists? How could anyone create ‘doubts’ about her PROVEN leadership, while not at the same time creating ALARM about 0bama’s UNPROVEN leadership?”

IMO McCain was severely psychologically damaged while being a POW. Appeasement may have been okay in a state race but you CAN'T appease on a national level. G.W. Bush has tried this and failed miserably at it.

IMO McCain should never have run for POTUS. He no longer has the psychological fighting skills that this office requires.

“He no longer has the psychological fighting skills that this office requires.”

Tough words, but I agree with your post.

I hope you will agree that we have been overtaken by events and the level of McCains fighting skills is no longer the issue.

‘...Wallace led him into the loser’s circle and asked him if he would be disappointed if he lost....’

McCain left another opportunity on the table.....Wallace asked if he would feel sorry for himself.....McCain said no cause he was blessed with a good life. McCain should have said I won’t feel sorry for myself but I’ll feel sorry for America!
